Strengths: Dependable, well built, easy to setup, all things you would expect from Pioneer. Within 1 hour of setting the recorder up, I was copying a home movie onto the hard drive to then record to DVD.
Weaknesses: A bit of a learning curve of all the functions, but nothing too difficult.
Summary: I have been very impressed with the Pioneer DVR-510H. After debating the pros and cons of different brands, I decided on this make and model. I have not been disappointed and feel I have made a good investment. Although there is some learning to use the machine, overall it is easy to get setup and start recording your home movies to DVD. The machine uses DVD-R or DVD-RW media for recording to DVD. There is no loss of quality when copying to the hard drive and then to DVD. I used the SP(2 hour) setting and the DVD copy looks as good or better than the original. There are 4 recording modes of fine( 1hr), SP( 2 hr), LP( 4hr) and EP( 6 hr). You can also use manual recording increments. Timer recordings are easy to set up and you can record to hard drive or DVD and set the recording speed. There are so many features on this machine that space constraints would not allow me to write of all of them. If you are looking for a high quality DVD recorder look no further than this machine. If you are into a lot of off air recording you might want to look into the DVR-810H with Tivo service built-in. Pioneer had the consumer interest in mind when they built these machines.
