Strengths: Video quality, VCR Plus, price, fast forward and fast rewind.
Weaknesses: A great many things to check before recording. Take a while to become routine. Difficult to read clock or other messages.
Summary: This is an attractive and (apparently) well made unit. The manual is very complete and easy to follow. I haven't tried some of the features, such as labels, yet. However, to view a DVD or record a TV show or VCR tape is a snap. It will not record commercial VCR tapes that are protected but it will record previously viewed tapes and homemade tapes. All-in-all it's a good buy and I'm happy with it. Using VCR Plus numbers is a lot easier that doing a time recording.

Strengths: An entry level DVD Recorder that has so many options and functions you'd find on more higher priced units. Recordered picture quality excellent.
An overall 4 star rating for this unit from Lite-on!
Weaknesses: Clock can be hard to read, also unit takes some getting used to...with all the recording modes.
Summary: I am very please with this purchase and the great price I paid for it on PriceGrabber.
This is a quality unit that I feel should last years under normal operation.

Strengths: Both + and - discs * MPEG-4 support * Looks good * Good picture quality * Does what it is supposed to * Easy to record and to program * 30s skip forward (commercial skip)
Weaknesses: No DTS support * No S-video in or out * No quick skip back * Weak menus
Summary: 2006-07-28 17:45:40 This product does what it is supposed to - it records DVDs from any source with good picture quality. I have tried different discs without problems. I have played recorded discs on many different players without problems.
I would have liked to see better menus when you browse a disc with pictures or music. There are actually no menus, you have to skip forward to get to a track/picture in the middle.
I also wish there was an easy way to display current time and time left of the movie etc. while playing it. There are too many pushes on the remote to get this information.
I am surprised that it doesn't support DTS or other sound programs but only Dolby Digital.
However, as a whole it seems to be a good player with good sound and picture quality. It records DVDs well and that is what I was looking for. Any one looking for the firmware update can find it here: us.liteonit.com/us/ind...

Strengths: Very easy to set up and start recording
Weaknesses: Frosted display makes it difficult to read from far away
Summary: I bought this about 2 months ago and am very happy with the purchase. This is the first DVDR I have purchased and am very pleased. The recording features are nice. The recorded data is somewhat good as the caption displays how long the recording is and when it was recorded. Only problem is that it shows a picture of the first frame recorded, which is usually not that helpful. The display could be a lot better...the window is frosted which is difficult to read when you are not close. All and all, for the price and functionality, I highly recommend it.

Strengths: Simple dvd recorder that also reads and plays everything... your other dvd player won't.
Weaknesses: Didn't appear to be fully functional right out of the box but works fine with a flash upgrade.
Summary: This is an entry-level dvd recorder with potentially huge bonus (depending on what watch) of being able to play everything including mpeg4 (divx, xvid), pal dvd, mp3, etc. To enjoy full functionality I recommend you upgrade it ASAP -- see manufacturer's website for d/l and install instructions, which essentially entail burning a file to a cd and inserting into dvdr, it does the rest so don't sweat it.

Strengths: Nice look, friendly guide, high video quality
Weaknesses: It is a little heavy, not good sound quality
Summary: This DVD recorder is my second one. The previous one is smaller than this one. So I need to find a large TV set in order to place it. The sound quality has a little problem. Sometimes there is noisy sound coming up and I don't know why. However, I think everything is good for this LiteOn product. I can use the timer recording easily through the remote and also set every function that I want. There is also a very good comparable capacity for this DVD recorder. You can play DAT, MPEG1, MPEG2, WMA, MP3,and Dix on it. For the cost and benefit, I think this one is really a good buy for a basic DVD recorder user.

Strengths: lots of features, price, good images thru component cables
Weaknesses: no 1080 up-conversion, no HDMI
Summary: Very nice unit from Lite-On, which makes good optical drives in general. The difficulty reading display referred to by others due to "frosted" display is the result of a frosted removable tape that protects the display from scratches. It is not obvious, but after looking at the displays for a minute or so, I realized they had this protective tape on them. Once removed, the displays are easy to read.

Strengths: Sleek and capable of recording on different DVD formats - DVD-R/RQ, DVD+R/RW and very easy to set up and do recording
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: I purchased Lite on LVW-5116GHC+ DVD recorder from buy.com after learing about it from pricegrabber.com. I got the recoder 3 days back and we already used it to do trial recoding on DVD+RW by using TV, VCR and DVD and it recorded from all three. The recorder is great for the price.
