Strengths: Works great with most major DVD brands and is priced reasonnable.
Weaknesses: Will burn Maxell DVD's DVD-R 16X only at 4X. Error free but takes foerever to burn.
Summary: Do not purchase Maxell DVD-R 16X unless you can afford the long burning time. Works fine with other brands I have tried: TDK, Memorex and Vakoss. I like the auto firmware update feature. I just wish that LG would make available a firmware update for the Maxell DVD's.

Strengths: Quiet and fast. not expensive after rebate
Weaknesses: a little bit heavy
Summary: I used this DVD burner for almost 2 months. It is really good and works as what I hope. It is quiet, much much better than my previous one. The burning speed is also very fast. I like it.

Strengths: Quiet, High Speed for burning data and music...very proficient.
Weaknesses: It's a little bulky.
Nero OEM is not as good as the Retail Version
Summary: Definitely a good buy. Burns all the major DVD formats out there. USB or Firewire. Burns a regular 4.7 gb DVD+ in about 3 minutes. Awesome. This is a great product, and it comes at a low price. I can't speak for the long run, but I haven't had any trouble with it so far.

Strengths: Very quiet, no errors found yet while burning, OEM version of Nero is included.
Weaknesses: No power switch.
Summary: This burner was on sale at Office Depot during Memorial Day weekend for $39.99 after a $50 mail in rebate. In the box are the burner, AC adapter, USB cable, manuals and software (Nero and Power DVD). According to some comments on the internet, this model can be upgraded to include Lightscribe with a firmware update, although I have not tried it myself.
The burner installed easily in Windows XP Professional and the software installed without difficulty.
This is my first DVD burner, so I can't compare it to others, it is much quieter than my previous external CD burner, however. The lack of a power switch keeps it from receiving five stars.

Strengths: noiseless, quick and very easy to install. It has a voltage range of 100-240, so can be used anywhere. supplied with the nero express software make it easy to write DVDs.It has flexible multi format,
Weaknesses: It has no power control or has no power indicator lamp.
Summary: got it from OD, and is worth more than the price. I used DVD- and DVD+ for recording movies it works great and the quality is very good. I also tried to write the CD, it works like a gem. I could also write the my video cam tapes to DVD directly using my video integrator.

Strengths: I got this one two days ago and it works well so far. I am planning to flash the firmware to make it better, and if it works, this is a great one. Having an external writer is so convenient!
Weaknesses: Not found yet.
Summary: I believe it is always good to have one external writer on handy. I can move it around and it works with just about any USB ports. I tried with Dell Dimension and Compaq Presario desktops, it works both well.

GSA-2164D review
Strengths: good looking, easy to use
Weaknesses: not fast enough since it is usb
Summary: not a bad drive for this price range, it looks good too, but seems like it is not fast enough. some computers only has 1.1 usb, this will take forever to burn.

Strengths: triple formats (DVD-RAM), quiet, compact, cool looking
Weaknesses: disc compatibility
Summary: This LG dvd burner is quiet, small enough, and supports DVD-RAM. with DVD-RAM in Windows XP, you can just drag files directly to the disc without a DVD burning program! However, this LG burned some of my discs at 4X speed even though they are rated at 8X. so the firmware needs to be updated more ofter for better disc compatibility. overall, it's a good buy.

Strengths: Noiseless, support multiple formats, comes with Nero OEM, great value for money
Weaknesses: Faced some problem during software installation
Summary: Have used it with my laptop. Overall a good buy though I did face a problem while burning one of the DVDs. The size of the burner is another minus.

Strengths: Fast error free writing, Quiet, Easy installation. Not very expensive for an external DVD writer
Weaknesses: No power switch. No bit setting.
Summary: I bought from Office Depot on sale for a good price. This drive has performed well from day one, with easy installation, quiet burning. I have had no errors yet. Only thing lacking is bitsetting, which is useful to be able to play on old picky DVD players. It does not have a power switch, so you have to remember to unhook the power to switch it off. This burner comes with the required AC adapter, USB cable, manuals and software (Nero and Power DVD). It does accept all the various brands of blank dvd discs I had, so I am happy.

The unit I got is not reliable
Strengths: quiet.
easy connection.
Weaknesses: unreliable
Summary: The unit I got does not work reliably. The first DVD burned smoothly. I can play the disc on all my computers and DVD players. A week later, I tried to burn another DVD image. It failed two discs (same brand). The burning process froze at the "lead-out" stage. I had to kill Nero Express to stop the burning process. Then I tried to burn the same image on the same brand of disc using the internal DVD burner on my desktop PC, it worked with no problem. So I believe the fault is on this external burner. Trying to see if this unit is totally bad, I tried to burn the same image again using this unit, this time it worked. To sum it up, it succeeded on the third try. I've not burned any DVD using this unit since, fearing waste of more discs. I'm not sure if I just happended to get a bad unit or this is a inherent quality issue with LG DVD burners. This unit does have some good things to it, it's very quiet and the connection to computer is very simple and fast. Overall, I would not recommend it because it is not a reliable burner.

Strengths: external, portable, 16x, accepts most of the dvds, quiet, upgradable firmware
Weaknesses: none so far.
Summary: this is external, portable 16x dvd writer. It burns quietly and has no coaster so far over several dvd media I have tried (Sony, Maxell, Memorex, Verbatim, Office Depot, Teon). Also tried several different CDs and no problem so far. It also supports dual layer but has not burnt one yet.

Strengths: Very easy software to install and use.
External drive seems to be very sturdy.
Weaknesses: Can't see any weaknesses yet. I wish the manuals were printed out for you.
Summary: The GSA-2164D external drive seems to be built very sturdy. I feel that is a real good feature since it is an external drive. The software that came with the drive was very easy to install and seems to be easy to use. I wish the manuals were actually written out. But most software is just including it on the CD now days. I feel it would be better if you could have a copy in the box. Instead of printing out the manual yourself. This CD had 5 different manuals and at least one was 165 pages. All in all the drive seems to be very good, and easy to use.
