Strengths: • Ease of use • Great picture quality • Ehternet networking actually works. • Internal cooling fan (active cooling) • Incredibly convenient
Weaknesses: • Tivo has a better remote. • Can't customize menu backgrounds, which can make show descriptions difficult to read. • IR blasters a bit cumbersome to use with satellite box.
Summary: I bought my Replay over Tivo b/c it seemed like Tivo wanted to nickle and dime me for everything. For example, when I bought my unit, Tivo would only work for networking if you spent an extra $99 on a networking kit (not something they highlighted in their advertising when they claimed their units were networkable). Replay networking functioned right out of the box with no extra charge or "kit" to buy.

In comparison to other units, the Replay has an active cooling fan on board in the 5500 series models (some earlier models have passive cooling- i.e. no fan). This means you can stack things like other components or DVDs on your Replay 5500 without overheating it. If you look at a unit and it has lots of air vents in the top- stay away unless you can sit it out in a well ventilated area (i.e. not in a cabinet, not with things stacked on it). Otherwise, you will shorten the life of the circuit board and if you have a lifetime subscription you will shorten the "lifetime" of your unit.

I currently have a 811.g wireless network and it interfaces flawlessly with Replay (Using Netgear WG101 bridge for Replay wireless connectivity, along with a Netgear WGT624 wirless router- one note didn't have any success using Netgear WG602 AP and bridge, but that was a Netgear issue)

The comments about not having two tuners seem a bit over the top to me- unless you are simply using the unit with a TV antenna or basic cable, two tuners inside the Replay unit would be useless (and would only increase the price), as you must rely on either your cable or satellite box as a tuner if you have any premium subscriptions such as HBO. Also, you CAN watch one channel and record another if you simply set up a bypass switch or splitter (go to Radio Shack to get one) to watch shows via a TV antenna (or via a basic cable connection) using your TV's tuner, while Replay uses it's tuner to record a show (granted this will only work if you have decent local reception).

Picture quality on the standard setting has been great- even for action films (the most likely programming to cause a problem). Of course, I do not have HDTV, so the issues may be different if you are going that route.

Overall, I have been thrilled with my Replay experience, plus if you are interested in streaming programming between rooms, you can buy a 5504 unit from Replay right now for $49 after rebate with free shipping and then pay only $6.95/month extra for service (even if you have lifetime subscription on your other box). So I guess you would have to count me as a Replay fan- I would definitely buy one again over a Tivo.

Strengths: Outstanding Picture, Really does let you network two or more boxes, very easy to program, second unit+ now is half price, progressive scan out, digital out, easy hookup
Weaknesses: Cannot watch and record, need to use TV only to watch second show. Lifetime subscription is tied to unit - cannot move to another unit later.
Summary: The technology blew me away and was happy that we networked our house. Bought two units and they work as one unit. We can watch two shows and record two shows and control everything from either TV or the Internet. Cannot watch and record at same time and need to use TV standalone to watch second show. The component video out and digital optic audio is great.

Live TV is buffered and this is great to pause and catchup. Skipping over commercials is easy and effective.

They now have deal on second unit and more at 1/2 monthly subscription. We bought 2 units - lifetime subscription one unit and took the discounted monthly rate on the second. Breakeven on the discounted rate is about 43 months.

I was amazed at the quality of picture. We have both hooked up to cable boxes and use svideo from cable box to replay box.

This product was so good, I registered in order to write this review.

My original plan was to go to Best Buy for DVD recorder. Brought one home and after two days took it back. The idea of "free TV Guide programming" was a good idea that I could not get to work.

Stumbled on ReplayTV at our company's employee perks discount web site. Acutally bought from PMD with excellant resoults. Replay TV has good rebate program. The units are upgradeble from with higher capacity hard drive and can connect with network desktop pc in order to burn DVD. I have not tried burning DVD. Need to download DVArchive in order to do this.

I believe they are way better than TIVO and have a true ethernet connection. This is based on setting a neighbors TIVO.

2 Star ReviewI purchased this 80 hour ReplayTV because I am sic ...
Strengths: Ability to record by finding the show in the channel guide and pressing the record button. 30-second commercial skip is great and quality on the high quality setting is decent.
Weaknesses: Glorified VCR, no dual tuners, myreplay.com website is worthless, $13 a month is a little steep for how much the hardware cost, read description for others.
Summary: 2004-05-26 21:29:13 I purchased this 80 hour ReplayTV because I am sick of using video tapes that degrade in quality everytime I use them, but I am not ready to pay for DVDs yet. After attaching the ReplayTV to my hometheater I was pretty happy with the way it looked and how easy it was to connect. This is where my disappointments begin because I set my expectations too high.

After hooking it up messed around with it before connecting to the service to download anything. A message bugged me everytime I tried to get into the menu saying "Don't forget to register". The playback quality was pretty horrible with black in the picture. Black didn't seem to be a color, it was an absence of color which made dark scenes hard to see. This was corrected by the software updates. Changing the channel is a long process for a channel flipper because it takes 3 seconds from a button push to the actual picture popping up. This may not seem like a long time, but you miss the old way soon enough.

I subscribed to the ReplayTV service and was charged a partial month since they like to charge everyone at the beginning of a month. No problems there.

I started to record my first show and to my dismay I was not able to record a show and watch a live show at the same time. I could only record a show and watch a pre-recorded show or the show that I was recording in delay. I looked up in the manual how to watch and record two seperate shows and in the manual tells you to turn off your ReplayTV and use your TV's tuner to watch the second show! (just like a VCR!). You also cannot record two shows that are on at the same time. This could be fixed with 2 tuners, but ReplayTV decided that your $230 to $330 (and $13 a month) for an 80 hour is not enough for another tuner.

80 hours is only 80 hours in the lowest quality setting. You get about 26 hours in the highest setting which is decent for viewing in a TV 27" or larger.

Myreplaytv.com is where you can go to set up your replay tv over the internet. Good idea, bad implementation. Even if you are connected to a cable or DSL modem, the ReplayTV only connects once every 24 hours so you can't record something that is going to come on in the next day through the ReplayTV. The site has been down a few times that I have tried to access it, the channel guide is only one week from what I have seen, and site often doesn't work when you want to record something.

All in all, I wouldn't buy one of these again, but being an active person I miss too much of the shows I love and I will keep it around. I am one of the few people that can get away with only having one tuner because I don't watch barely any live TV and I don't record more than a 10 shows a week. Anyone who watches live TV a lot or wants to record a decent amount of shows will still have to choose between shows (something I thought the ReplayTV was supposed to correct).

EDIT: Decided to return the unit because it did not work for what I needed it to, suggestion for ReplayTV: 2 Tuners

I will see what I can do to return the unit through the seller since I didn't buy directly from ReplayTV.

If you purchase one of these, make sure that you do not activate the unit until you have tried it out for the 7 day period. Also, make sure that you read and follow the seller's return guidelines because the ReplayTV.com "30-day guarantee" only applies to purchases from their website only.

Strengths: Easy to record, you can pause live tv!
Weaknesses: You can't record 2 programs at the same time.
Summary: I was very pleased with the Replay TV. I love being able to pause and rewind live TV. The only weakness is the inability to record two programs at the same time. Also, when you're recording something, you cannot watch live TV, only previously recorded programs
