Strengths: * Removes more contaminants than the Deluxe, (4396508,) which used to be the best available * Easy to swap, no mess, no repairman required * Bulk purchase discounts available
Weaknesses: * Costs $3 more than Deluxe * Only lasts six months (gotta put something here)
Summary: We have a Kenmore (Whirlpool) refrigerator with ice and water in the door. This filter is for that water source.

After living in Phoenix and San Jose, places with very bad water, I no longer trust the tap water that feeds this line, and always look for quality filters. We also drink a lot of bottled water.

Cost of mine, from ABT Electronics via Price Grabber, with free shipping (wow!) was $34.00. That works out to 8.5 cents per gallon. At that price, even if I had a whole house water filter, I'd get one of these for the fridge.

Of course, bulk orders offer more discounted pricing.

There is a light at the top of the refrigerator side which monitors the status of the filter. It supposedly monitors water flow, and changes to yellow when its near the end of its life, then red when the allotted 400 or 500 gallons have been filtered. (There is a procedure to switch from 400 to 500 gallon monitoring.)

When the filter is replaced, the monitor must be manually reset. (Push in light switch button 5 times.)

This filter is for such models where the filter is in the grill at the bottom of the freezer side behind a plastic cap. Replacing the filter is simple: Just twist the cap to the left a quarter turn and pull out the filter. The cap from the old filter slides off and is then put on the new filter. (Don't throw away the cap!) Slide in the new filter and turn it to the right to lock it. It was not necessary to turn off the water when I did mine, no spills resulted other than a little dribble out of the old filter. Not sure if that's true for yours.

There is generally a $3.00 price difference between the old deluxe filter, that used to be the best available, and the new ultimate, which is the best now.

For those looking for comparison of deluxe vs. ultimate...

Both filters leave Fluoride in the water.

Contaminant...... Deluxe / Ultimate

Cysts............ --- / 99.99%

Atrazine......... --- / 85.6%

2,4-D............ --- / 93.06%

Asbestos......... --- / 99.93%

Turbidity........ --- / 99.3%

Particulates..... 95.1% / 99.9%

Chlorine......... 99.0% / 97.6%

Lead @ pH 6.5.... 99.35% / 99.35%

Lead @ pH 8.5.... 99.31% / 99.31%

Mercury @ pH 6.5. 96.22% / 96.7%

Mercury @ pH 8.5. 91.57% / 91.2%

Benzene.......... 96.4% / 96.3%

P-Dichlorobenzene 99.77% / 99.7%

Toxaphene........ 92.86% / 92.96%

There is one contaminant, Carbofuran, which the Deluxe is rated to remove, but the Ultimate is not, per the box.

I'm not a contaminant expert, but some research shows me that 2,4-D is a nasty weed killer ingredient which can lead to kidney, liver, and adrenal gland problems (and has shown up in our tests on our water.) Cysts are a big issue as well for us. Atrazine and asbestos are linked with increased risk of benign intestinal polyps, cardivascular system problems and reproductive difficulties. Turbidity has "no health effects", but can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth.

If I didn't have the extra $3.00, or if an Ultimate was out of stock for some reason, I'd have no issue buying a Deluxe. The Ultimate is just a better filter, for less than a penny more per gallon of water.

Strengths: Good tasting water. Filtering out contaminants. Better than the cheaper filter Whirlpool 4396508 because this one does not remove flouride.
Weaknesses: Installation was a bit tricky. Expensive to replace every 6 months.
Summary: This is my first 4396510 filter. In the past I had the 4396508 filter. I figured for a few bucks more why not try a better filter. I think my water has never tasted better!! Plus flouride for my teeth too! I had a little trouble installing this filter, I didn't turn it far enough. Another note, when you're draining the first 3 gallons, the water coming out of the first gallon will be very slow. Don't worry, it's not your fridge nor your filter, but it's the water filling up the new filter. I was worried at first, but after the first gallon everything was fine.

Strengths: This is the "ultimate" filter that reduces more including:Chlorine taste & odor, Particulate, Lead, Mercury, Benzene,P-Dichlorobenzene, Toxaphene, 2,4-D, Asbesto, Cysts, Turbidity, and Atrazine.
Weaknesses: Directions don't tell you to remove the grille which makes it easier to turn the filter.
Summary: This filter fits Whirlpool and KitchenAid water filtration system refrigerators that have the filter located below the freezer compartment door.

I have made several filter replacements since purchasing my refrigerator in 2003. This filter is a great performer as it lasts at least six months. The directions indicate that you can replace without removing the grille but I have found it easier to make the switch after removing the grille.

Strengths: Removes more contaminants than the Deluxe, ease of replacement just twist and pull.
Weaknesses: none
Summary: Using this filter for the Best Buy Inglis made by Whirlpool. There is a difference between the Deluxe filter and this new Ultimate filter. The Ultimate filters more contaminates and the taste of the water is noticeably better than the Deluxe. For the 3.00 extra, it is well worth the investment.

Strengths: It's easy to change and flush with 3 gallons of water.
Weaknesses: It says it only lasts 6 months but the light on my KitchenAid fridge says it last 1 year (accurate to within a few days of the filter installation).
Summary: I have been using the deluxe filter for the first 3 years and the ultimate filter for the last 2 years. I can't taste a difference between the deluxe and the ultimate filter but my wife can. That is why I am buying the ultimate again instead of the deluxe.

Strengths: Certified to remove much more contaminants than the 4396508 - great tasting water - easy to swap out.
Weaknesses: Only lasts 400 gallons vs. 500 gallons - you have to change your filter light sensor in your fridge based on this.
Summary: Very easy to install - great filter - see other reviews to see exactly what it removes (much more than the 4396508). It is well worth the few extra bucks you have to pay. Why risk having certain contaminants in your water? Just shell out the few extra bucks and know you are getting cleaner water. ABT has a great deal on these - cheaper than if you buy the 4396508 retail. Buy the Whirlpool 4396510, you won't be disappointed.

Strengths: Ease of installation; Effectiveness in filtering out contaminants
Weaknesses: None
Summary: My wife is extremely sensitive to contaminants in water; she swears that bottled water tastes better than our tap water & refuses to drink unfiltered tap water. However, using the filter produces water that she'll actually drink. So as they say, "the proof is in the pudding."

Does it work? Well, it works well enough for us if she says she can notice a difference.

Strengths: Great Tasting water
Weaknesses: Only for 400 gallons of water, direction was very minimal.
Summary: Since the time I have replaced the filter with this one, I have noticed the vast difference in the taste of the water. I feel the water tastes like one from the ozarka water bottles. The installation was very easy. The direction didnt specify how much water I have to pass through before I start using it.

I read some previous comments regarding the different impurities this filter takes out of the tap water. Afer reading that I was bit scared of using tap water for cooking. I hope I could use similar filters on my tap too.

Strengths: One of the best in-refrigerator water filters available to remove a wide range of contaminants. Much better than just "taste and odor" filters.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: This filter is made for my Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator and can be used in place of Sears' more expensive filter. It removes most particulate, metal and organic contaminants in addition to taste and odor for up to six months. It will not remove fluoride put in the water to protect your children's teeth. It is the best one that I can find.
