Crashed! Seagate 300g external hard drive is JUNK! Don't buy this.
Strengths: none
Weaknesses: Won't power up
Summary: I am but another person with the power up problem. I bought it 5 months ago and have only turned it on a few timeS. Put all of my laptop info on it and then erased my laptop. Now Seagate won't turn on! Seagate will replace this drive, but they want $700.00 to recover my data. I am screwed. Don't by Seagate products. Not to mention its hard to even get help because you are talking to someone from India and you can't even understand each other. I will never buy any product associated with Seagate company or Maxtor ever again. I am so disappointed.

2) Quiet, very low sound.
3) Reliable, I used it all day and all night, no problem!
4) High capacity, 300GB! Lots of music and movies!
5) Easy to use, One touch botton!
Strongly recommend!

Strengths: None for the product itself
Weaknesses: Back up software
Summary: This is a great product that comes with a great warrenty. The only weakness is its back up software. It only provide the trial version of "Bounceback Express". You are not able to synchronize your backup disk with your PC or labtop unless you pay $10 more on its website...This is ridiculous!!!

Strengths: USB 2.0 and Firewire compatible
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: This is the second such drive I've purchased to back up files. I've found the setup and use to be very easy. These drives come with BounceBack software for 1 button backup, but I don't use that feature, so I don't know how well that works.

Strengths: Space availability is large, fast transfer rates, quiet, easy to install, user-friendly, and 1 yr. warranty.
Weaknesses: N/A.
Summary: I was looking for an external harddrive for almost half a year, trying to figure out which product was top-notch. After lots of reading and buying different ext. harddrives from various companies, I can tell you right now Seagate beats them all. Their harddrives come with everything a person would want in an external harddrive.
If you are able to find a good price for this harddrive, I definitely recommend going for it.

Strengths: A reasonable price(esp.$5 rebate!), A satable working with silence. Its design is very nice. It works very fast.
Weaknesses: A back-up software is problmatic, but not a big deal.
Summary: I ordered this external hard drive a week ago. It was delivered well. When I try to use this one, I felt this is a really one what I wanted to find. The name value of "Seagate" was a crucial factor made me buy. Whenever I use this, I find the there are many merits such as, its design, fast speed, stability, and silent performance. Because of this one, my two lap-tops come to loose their weights! I highly recommend you to buy it! In order to buy this, I have researched most of the external hard drives for months. "Seagate" was the best choice.

Strengths: 1. large capacity, supports both USB 2.0 and 1394 firewire
2. twice cache than 8MB, really good performance
3. easy installation, work quiet
Weaknesses: Not much weakness. Maybe it is a little bit heavy to carry around.
Summary: It is awesome. Works for Windows XP without any problem. It is quiet and fast. No worry about hard drive failures because of five years warranty. I am really happy with it.

Strengths: Large storage with fast firewire connection.
Relatively quiet.
Weaknesses: Bulky/heavy to relocate when needed
Summary: This drive is impressive with its quiet operation. I like the fast firewire connection (vs USB2.0) especially when transferring large video data. Sustained transfer rate is higher. Installation is easy. Unfortunately can't comment on the backup software since I haven't tried it yet. If you work with video data, you would love the large storage.

DON'T COUNT ON IT LASTING
Strengths: EASY TO USE
Weaknesses: WON'T LAST
Summary: Both a friend and myself have purchased this drive about 6 months ago. His crashed (no longer powers up) about a month ago. Mine just did the same thing after very infrequent use. It just stopped and will not power up. Although it worked great when it was working, it is useless to depend on as a backup.

Mine just quit starting like the reviewers above described
Strengths: Seemed like a nice backup drive, decent speeds.
Weaknesses: It crashed and burned after 4 months of ownership, and maybe 2-3 hours of actual use. Backup software(bounceback) is cumbersome and annoying.
Summary: I bought this as a BACKUP drive, something to trust in case my main drive fails. It failed after the first actual backup I performed with the included software, taking with it 100's of photos that I unfortunately didn't get a chance to preserve on some other more secure form of media, and had dumped from my recycle bin just before this drive's failure. The power button won't light up, but if I hold it down I can hear the HD inside spinning up, and a couple times I heard it accessing. Seagate's warranty will replace the drive, but not the data and it's a $50 fee just to evaluate the drive to see if they can retrieve the data. I popped off the top cover of the drive to discover they have secured the other end with Torx Plus Tamper-Resistant bits, so no opening it up to see if it might interface with an internal drive controller without voiding the warranty by breaking the plastic casing. I'm no fan of conspiracy theories but with what I understand they charge for data recovery, and the tamper-proof design of the case, I am tempted to wonder if Seagate has some kind of racket set up with this product. Now I'm faced with destroying the casing and losing ~$180 spent for the drive for voiding the warranty to see if the HD inside has IDE connectors that if by lucky chance I could use to access my priceless data (7GB of pictures of my trip to Brazil), or sending it back to seagate and possibly spending inordinate amounts of money for data retrieval and through warranty a new drive that I won't be able to trust for backups. My advice, don't trust this drive as a backup device. Don't install the included software if you do get it. Buy at your own peril!

crashed!
Strengths: none
Weaknesses: crashed after 2 months
Summary: I purchased this at Best Buy 2 months ago. The info stored is necessary. This hard drive went down. Seagate will replace it under warranty but will charge me $700 to $4000 to recovery the data. Unbelievable Looks like to others have commented on the CRASH!

Strengths: Ease of use
Weaknesses: Backups not implementable as advertised: see below
Summary: There were sufficiently many departures between the Mac OS X on my mac mini and the description thereof (by Seagate) so that thus far I haven't been able to obtain a backup by pushing the button on the front of the Seagate external hard drive. With the drive on the desktop, one may drag files to copy them onto the drive.

POWER FAILURE WITH THIS PRODUCT TWICE ARRRRRRRRRRRRH!
Strengths: NONE
Weaknesses: WHERE DO I START.
Summary: The advertisement for this product states (& I quote) "Your computer can only hold so many files—and you run the risk of losing everything if something happens to it. DVDs and Cd's have a place in archiving, but they get scratched and lost. Imagine your entire family history lost because a computer crashes" well this is truly misleading as my interpretation is that they're product is solid & reliable yet i have had to Power failures with these external drive the first after 3 weeks & no this time after 9 months & with everything Pics, family vids etc backed up on it. Also managed to get through to Call centre in Asia & they could not understand me & vice versa. ABSOLUTE JOKE passed from one person to the next told to call back given a different number that was actually a singles line. Most definitely the cynic in me but i agree with member above as I was passed to data recovery and i was quoted $1200 - $2500 to recover data. theres many companies in Ireland doing the same thing for a fraction less just got quited $300 Do not buy this product steer clear.
