Strengths: Supported formats, performance, OSD
Weaknesses: High retail price, no HDMI, MPEG4 playback disabled
Summary: I should start by mentioning that I paid $85 for this player. I definitely recommend this player at that price, but I would not recommend it for the MSRP of $300. Also, be aware that the SP502 is actually a rebadge of the Pioneer 578A. Internally, the players are the same. The Pioneer is available for about $100 new or for about $50 used or refurbished.
This player supports SACD, DVD-Audio, and (unofficially) MPEG4 — something that most players cannot claim. However, MPEG4 support can only be enabled by installing modified firmware. This player can also be made region-free by using third party firmware.
I’m completely satisfied with the audio/video performance. PAL to NTSC conversion is excellent. Although it is a minor feature to compliment, I also really like the OSD. This player is also nice in appearance (for the amount I paid), but the remote is certainly nothing special.
There is no HDMI output, so skip this player if you require one. However, the Pioneer 578A is a very good choice if you don’t require HDMI, or if you’re just looking for an inexpensive DVD-A/SACD player.
If you are interested in this player but cannot find it at a good price, take a look at the Pioneer 578A or 588A. For the right price, these universal players are an excellent value. But because of the inflated retail price of the Onkyo, I’m only giving this player 4/5.
