Strengths: Dynamic sound, features, power, price.
Weaknesses: Hard for me to pinpoint, I'm sure there are a few, remo somewhat confusing and the set-up is somewhat cumbersome.
Summary: How can I make this simple? Over the past 35 years I've had the opportunity to listen to Tube amps with Electrostatics, Denons, HK's, Haflers & many others.

The Yamaha RX-V1400 is simply OUTSTANDING! Nothing special about my gear, a basic Cd player, DVD has digital outputs and I built my speakers using parts from online suppliers. Fronts are 6 1/2" fiberglass woofers ($14ea) matched with 1" fabric dome tweeters ($25ea), enclosures are 11"x7"x7". The center, surrounds & presence speakers are a myriad of leftovers from previous projects, nothing exotic, in fact I was trying to prove a point that I could build a quality sound system at a fraction of the cost of most commercial set-ups.....mission accomplished. Got a $100 subwoofer too, a total of $2100 invested including TV.

Read my lips, "the THX is CHEST CRUSHING, WALL SHAKING, WINDOW RATTLING"! Clear and distinct sound would also be descriptive. This is not apartment gear, my house sits on an acre and I get that "IT'S TOO LOUD LOOK" from my 17 yr old son! Can't wait to audition Saving Private Ryan.

Now for the good stuff, the CD music is an extreme pleasure! The soundstage, the imaging, the musicality. When listening to your favorite music you'll hear little nuances that you probably missed before or that were barely audible with your old set-up! The other cool deal is that if you've got a high powered amp that you just can't give up you can plug it in for your main speakers, very simply! The options go on forever!

Now for the bad news. This didn't happen as soon as I hooked it up! I've been playing with this thing for months, the setup configuration can be a little tricky, but believe me it's all been worth the effort! I've got the LFE (bass) set to both (front/sub)...still learning. All the possibilities are almost overwhelming but thank god for all the technology that went into this puppy! Use optical connects...the absolute best. Don't forget to put the pets outside & make sure cell phone is on vibrate....enjoy, it's a steal!

Strengths: expandibility
Weaknesses: setup can be a chore if there is excessive background noise. Make sure your speaker polarity is correct or you'll have problems.
Summary: The jacks on the back are crowded and if you have big hands connections can be a chore. If your hooking up multiple components with different types of jacks remember that the SVHS jack will override the other connections.

Strengths: THX optimizer easily configures optimal sound for your environment. Incredible power and clarity at unbelievable price. Assignable inputs & more digital audio inputs than anything in its class.
Weaknesses: Only two (only?) component video inputs. Horrible remote control
Summary: Stop. If you're looking for a new receiver, just go get this one. There are better receivers out there to be sure, but not for anything close to the price.

First, the bad stuff. There are only two component video inputs on this unit - one for HDTV and one for a DVD player. You're game station (XBox, PS2) is relegated to substandard S-Video output, but does get upconverted to component, so there is a slight improvement in image there. The main thing is the remote. It's confusing and clumsy to hold.

Now the techs - I have it hooked up in a 7.1 configuration with Axiom speakers - M22ti fronts, VP100 Center, EP175 sub & 4 QS4 Surrounds). I use a Pioneer progressive scan DVD player & DishNetwork's 811 HDTV receiver. The video is through an InFocus X1 projector onto a 106" DaLite screen. The receiver switches everything flawlessly and the on-screen displays are perfect.

But the best thing is the sound. You can tweak this unit 7 ways come Sunday & spend months getting the sound just right. It has every configuration imaginable. Or, you can plug in the included optimizer and let it configure itself. Wow. Within 5 minutes it had re-calibrated everything to THX standard levels for the room acoustics, the speaker type & spacing. The only fault I have is that it doesnt allow you to do that in multiple spots in the room for the best balanced sound & creates a pretty specific "sweet spot."

All in all you won't find a better receiver anywhere near this price.

Strengths: OPTIONS!!! If you cant setup for the "sweet-spot" then you better quite now and sell everything!!!!
Weaknesses: Remote
Summary: This is the 3rd A/V unit that I have owned. The Yammy is the best. You have the option to auto setup the speakers to THX standard or you can do it manual. Each channel has it's own EQ. Way too many sound fields to piss-off the wife. Power is ample and setup is fast and easy. Out of the box experiance is the best. Dont waste any more time looking around. WHY??? Yamaha has the best processer for Surround. Every other builder uses the old Yamaha processer or the Motorola chip. Need I say more.

I hope this helps.

Strengths: Very sleek, powerful, and functional unit.
Weaknesses: Hard to control.
Summary: I love the unit and all its plusses. It gives tons of connections and supports many different types of units. The remote isnt as bad as people say, I have mine controlling every device in my basement. The device is sleek very powerful and delivers accurate sound. The only thing I dont like is that its not the easiest reciever ive dealt with.
