Strengths: Easy install, very functional software suite with lots of options (online expansion, ability to use different disk sizes, on-line swap, etc).. And lots of SATA ports.
Weaknesses: Software isnt very intuitive or "pretty", but gets the job done.
Summary: So far so good. Install was simple - the first boot it takes a couple of minutes for it to make it through the Adaptec BIOS section, after that it is much faster.

I installed a 3 disk raid 5 array to test out for stability and functionality, and so far things are working well. The building/initalizing of the array was slow, but that could have been because of the 500gB disks used.

1 Star ReviewAdaptec 2820SA JUNK
Strengths: not many, well, none in fact.. though it will single handedly destroy your data given enough time.
Weaknesses: ADAPTEC. the claimed leaders or founders of scsi and raid standards. not true hardware raid, no true bus disconnection. rubish hard drive support.
Summary: it reviewed at the top of it's class. reputed for it's performance in raid 6 configurations. so it was the natural product to choose for an archive server. HOW WRONG WE WERE. Although the box advertised raid 6 support, it was not until a firmware update that features like raid 6 and raid level migration were activated. leading me to believe that this product left dry dock long before it was ready. a few firmware upgrades later, nothing has changed. it still drops up to 3 drives at a time, rendering any RAID level useless. sometimes, only by magic, and in defiance of RAID (physics) laws, we have restored the data.

Most recently, our raid 6 config dropped 1 drive, and the subsequent rebuild corrupted data on several partitions, the MBR and the partition table. I now have no tools left in my recovery arsenal to recover the data. 1.2TB of data, there, but not there..

I can not express my level of dissapointment in Adaptec, especially their customer support section.

This controller has set us back $5000 in drive costs and the cost of a new machine and storage system.

NO, it is not worth any sum of money.

Adaptec has chased the features it's competitors offer and lost the focus of true industry standard performance and above all reliability.

Strengths: 8 Serial ATAII Disk Support. Performs as one would expect
Weaknesses: Picky about disks it supports. Adaptec support poor.
Summary: I use this card in 2 different servers, one is Win2000 the other is Win2003. Had problems with drive fallout using WD raptors (WD740's) Replaced with enterprise class WD's all problems went away. Adaptec says use enterprise class drives but don't say who's or which ones. Western Digial Enterprise drives that (At the WD site) state they are RAID Level drives in the Enterprise class seem to fit the bill. Bottom line, if you use desktop drives you will probably have problems especially with multiple arrays on a single card. Use the correct drives it works great.
