Strengths: Makes a HOT pot in only 3 minutes.
Rugged build and appearance.
Easy to use filter basket - large, pull-out, slide-in, and does not get in the way on the coffee pot.
Does not drip when you pour.
Weaknesses: Must be plugged in all of the time.
Thermos only keeps HOT coffee for an hour or so.
Summary: I did a lot of research before I bought this BUNN coffee maker. It has many good features and only a couple negatives, but they are by design, and cannot be helped.
It brews a FAST pot of coffee - 3 minutes, but in order for it to have that capability, it must keep the water pre-heated. I contacted BUNN about the cost of this and they said it would run about $.15-$.20 a day for it's operation-a small price to pay for its performance.
The coffee is HOT when first brewed and will stay that way for a little over an hour. If you "prime" the carafe first with hot water you can stretch it to almost 2 hours. The pot is only 10 cups (vs 12 of many others) of 5 oz. coffee so I do not have a problem drinking it before it gets to warm. Using a carafe you will never have that burnt coffee taste or worry about it burning the bottom of the pot.
The filter holder, lid, and pot are dishwasher safe. The lid is very easy to get off and on the carafe for filling and cleaning purposes.
DRIPS - I had read a few reviewers that complained the pot dripped no matter what they did...I, on the other hand, could NOT get it to drip no matter how hard I tried! I tried fast pours, slow pours, small pours, and big pours; it simply would not drip. That is a first for any pot I have previously owned .
You MUST use BUNN filters in this machine or you will have grounds that will "spill-over" the filter top. BUNN filters are taller and with the fast brew cycle many other brands will simply not drain fast enough; especially when using decaf or finely ground coffee.
I have also read a few reviews that claimed because of the fast brew cycle they must use extra coffee, adding to the expense. My personal experience is that I can use LESS coffee and still have the same full-flavor. The first pot I made I used almost the same amount of coffee (I lessened it slightly because my old maker was a 12-cup) and it tasted like Starbucks...too strong for me. So now I can use less coffee and have better flavor. BUNN claims that 200 degrees at 3 minutes is the perfect brew cycle; anything longer than that and the coffee will become bitter.
It is a little on the expensive side (about $150), but you get what you pay for...a well-built machine and a great cup of coffee. But there are no "bells and whistles" on this machine. No digital read-outs, no clock, no timer to have coffee ready when you wake up; even the same model with the hot-plate does not have the auto-off feature...all manual.
There are no measurements on carafe to make a half pot or some other # of cups besides 10; but I always make a full pot so that doesn't bother me.
If I had ONE pet-peeve it would be for the amount of money this machine cost, it should come with a stainless steel coffee measuring scoop to match the machine!
I HIGHLY recommend this machine to those that like a simple machine to operate and a great, hot, cup of coffee. With a 3 minute brew cycle who needs to pre-set it for in the morning? BUNN has been in the coffee maker business a long time and know how to do it right.
