Strengths: Excellent VCR recording and playback, superb DVD quality, plays a wide variety of formats.
Weaknesses: It is somewhat difficult to master its many features--one must read the instruction book very carefully--but the time spent is well worth the effort.
Summary: I have owned many VCRs and this machine is far superior to them all in its recording capability and in the playback quality. It even improves the quality of tapes recorded on older machines. The DVD player plays both + and - formats (the instruction book and the box claim it only plays the - format). Also plays video CDs that I have created on the computer. The audio output is fantastic using a digital optical cable. This combo unit contains a host of useful features, but one must be patient when learning how to use them. For example, I could not understand why the on-screen display for the VCR would not work until I discovered that I had to activate "superimpose" in the menu first. But once you master all the features you will realize what a true gem this machine is.
