Strengths: All the benefits of the HM-DH30000, with slightly better D-VHS playback and better analog recording/playback. Improved menus and quieter operation.
Weaknesses: S-VHS ET mode requires changing program menu, no jog shuttle on remote. Still has lack of effects features in D-VHS mode. No more large LED info screen on front panel.
Summary: Has all the strengths of the HM-DH30K and a few improvements. In D-VHS mode, playback begins a few seconds faster from stop and pause, and transfers into play faster from FF and RW. The analog playback and recording has been improved a little as well. The menus look much nicer and are easier to navigate. The OSD is also nicer, but takes up more room on the screen. Because of the lack of the large info screen of the front panel, you now have to cycle through with the remotes "Display" button to find out the same info the HM-DH30K offered up front such as remaining time on tape, the time and counter. To use SVHS-ET mode, this item must be changed in the setup menu rather than the simple button push the HM-DH30K used. The HM-DH40K also now outputs DTS, but I have not tried it yet. The HM-DH40K also has a new MPEG2 encoder, but so far I cannot tell a difference in quality between it and recordings made on a HM-DH30K. One major difference is the operation sound level. This unit is much quieter than the HM-DH30K in both playback and recording. Other than that, all other features appear to be unchanged. If you don't plan on doing much analog recording and you don't prefer DTS over DD, the HM-DH30K should be fine. If you want the extra features and the above improvements, go with the HM-DH40K.
