Strengths: See comments below: A number of great features in a very solidly built package. Well balanced, easy and comfortable to use, built Ridgid tough. Best heavy duty belt sander on the market today.
Weaknesses: None unless not trapping 100% of the dust in the dust bag is a negative, but I don’t know of any sander that will do this.
Summary: The belt sander I’ve used for years gave up the ghost so I’ve been comparing the various choices (PC, Makita, Dewalt, etc.). Tried out a friends Ridgid R2720 for a week on a current project before purchasing one today and decided this is the best of the best when you compare features, balance, ease of use, warranty, etc. Check it out at Home Depot and I think you’ll agree it is one extremely well made, solid, professional quality tool. At 10 amps, it has enough power to tackle the most demanding sanding jobs, and I like the fact that it's heavy enough (10.5 pounds) to work on it’s own weight, making it much less fatiguing than a lighter sander that requires you to push into the wood while sanding to get the job done. Ease of use is great due to a number of well thought out features including: (1) very good balance; (2) rubber over-mold handle and front grip that make it very comfortable to hold; (3) three-position adjustable front handle; (4) belt tracking adjustment that keeps the paper from sliding; (5) 6-position variable speed wheel within easy reach; (6) and the ‘soft-start’ feature which I really like.

Bottom-line: The 3”x21” format combined with 10 amps of power is more than enough for initial rough sanding, yet the lower variable speed, balance and ease of use will allow me to use this sander for more detailed work as well. It’s built like a tank and feels like it will last years and years which I’m sure it will. Also, the three year warranty provided by Ridgid along with their ‘Lifetime Service Agreement’ make this one Very Nice Tool!

Strengths: 10 AMPS! Variable speed, and slow start both provide optimum control. Paper centers beautifully and tracks the same.
Weaknesses: NONE
Summary: After having used many belt sanders in the past, from DeWalts to Black and Deckers, to standard old Craftsmans, but never having owned one myself. Read all the reviews and decided the Ridgid was the best bet. Boy, was I right. Not only is it an awesome sander, Home Depot has it in store for 159.00 - LESS than it lists it online. So without paying shipping, I got this the day I decided I wanted it, just by going to HD and picking it up. That was score #1.

Score #2 is the best though. This sander is SMOOTH and CONTROLLED. It's REALLY, REALLY, nice. It handles like a dream. It's a belt sander, so it's loud, but it's relatively clean, smooth, and effective. I am totally satisfied.
