Strengths: Stylish look, Slim, light weight, long battery life, good screen, built-in camera, BIG HDD, Card reader, SONY Like-No-Other.
Weaknesses: Battery goes down when you use CPU intense applications. Some heat but acceptable. Acceptable fan noise.
Summary: I migrated from cheaper laptop to this Sony VAIO FJ170. It is my first love. Excellent in my first look. Looks like small book when I lifted it up. Slim too. I thought to buy FS series laptop as it is stylish, but this is too good. Specifications are far better than FS series. I chose this mainly because of its webcam feature, big HDD, slim and light weight. I first made recovery DVD once I bought. Then I removed some shareware applications and freed some space. Some applications are from Sony. They are very useful but I didn't try too much but they are worthy. Card reader is another useful utility. I use products of Sony mostly. I have Sony P200 digital camera, Sony Clie UX40 pda. All these devices make use of Memory stick and I find card reader ready to hand. It has got Image/Video converter to Memory stick format for playing in PDAs cell phones cameras. I havent tested this utility. SonicStage, Roxio, Click to DVD are few other applications that might be useful. Beautiful screen glossy and reflective but looks good. You can see your face on blank screen. Comes with Office 2003 trial and Works. Web Camera feature is fine but I was sitting in dark hence I could see some noise. It should work fine in good light. I feel all cameras including digital cameras exhibit this behavior thus I have no comment. Battery lasted for 3hrs minimum and can go upto 4hrs max. I feel AC adaptor is lil bit big but I dont mind as I carry backpack. I feel touch pad is not ergonomically placed. Though it is displaced from the center I'm used to it. Wireless switch makes easy to turn on/off WiFi. Fan makes some noise (I mean it runs) but not continuous unlike my old laptop it is far better and acceptable. Though it gets warm sometimes but I never mind cuz I put it on table always and btw it is acceptable not too much. WiFi is breeze. It picked up signal at my school and home easily. My only gripe is that it didn't have Bluetooth. I feel it fortunate as Bluetooth specification is not thorough I like to pair up through cheaper USB dongle. It doesn't have latch and fancy thing that is missing in my old laptop is it resumes from hibernate/standby automatically once you open the lid. Draws attention. I do not play games so I cannot judge in that perspective but it serves my school needs very well. It catches attention that is for sure. It matches my lifestyle. SONY is LIKE-NO-OTHER. It lives upto my name. My VAIO, my PDA, my Cybershot and me all are like-no-other.
