Strengths: Clarity of picture, inputs, set-up, projection distance
Weaknesses: slightly green "whites" out of the box, light output could be stronger for a 120" screen
Summary: I did alot of research prior to chosing this model, most of it at the avsforum.com website. I bought this sight unseen as I could nto find a local dealer. My configuration is as follows:
Dalite cinema vision 120" 1.3 gain screen
Room controlled lighting
19' throw
Yamaha v1600 receiver
jbl l-1200 fronts
jbl center
jbl sub
bose 101 rears (4)
Directtv hd
urc-300 remote
oppo dvd
I could not be happier with this unit. DVD's are incredible and HD channels are plasma like. I am viewing the screen as close as 10' and see absolutely no screen door or vertical banding. My room is totally dark, therefore light output from the projector is adequate. If I could not control the light, I would highly recommend a maximum screen size of 100" and a higher gain screen.
Set-up was a snap, as I am running 1 50' hdmi cable from the receiver to the oppo without any issues. The manual "gets the job done" and assumes you have some basic knowledge. All directtv channels are not very sharp, due to their non hd broadcasts. But, when you switch to a HD channel the picture is incredible! I am extremely picky when it comes to picture quality and this unit does not disappoint me.
If you like your picture bright, you have plenty of room to adjust the contrast, however I have noticed that when you move the contrast high, you begin to lose details on the whites. As I have yet to due any sort of fine-tuning on the unit, I am presuming that I will have the capability to enhance the picture quality. Remember I said I was picky about picture quality so dont let this disuade you. Everyone who comes over can not believe this is a projector that I purchased for about $3500. It rivals 10k projectors from 2 years ago!
Ratings 1-5
Picture Quality - 5
Brightnes at 19', 120" - 3.5
Inputs - 4
Setup - 5
Manual - 3.5
Optoma remote - 4
Please note that the brightness limitation can easily be overcome with a higher gain screen and/or a screen size of less then 120".
A highly recommend a universal remote in order to control everything from one unit. The urc300 (purchased seperately) does a great job of this. I also purchased the rf station for the unit so that I could house all of my components behind a wall. It works great. Please keep in mind the necessity of having a remote that is backlit and has a combination of buttons and touch screen keypads, as most of your usage will be in the dark.
Overall, this unit is incredible. I cant see upgrading to anything else for a long time. I highly recommend this unit to everyone, provided you can control the light in your environment
