1 Star ReviewVERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS DVD RECORDER
Strengths: Easy to use, great picture/recording WHEN IT WORKS
Weaknesses: Freezes up, records sometime WITH NO SOUND! Only way to fix is to unplug, then completely reset the unit. RCA has no fix.
Summary: I still continue try to use this DVD recorder. Sometimes it will work for a week or two without a problem, then it will freeze and either not record, or suddenly record WITHOUT SOUND! I've contacted RCA/Thompson about 10 times now, but they don't have any solution except to bring it somewhere (the 2 places they gave me locally to call said they haven't worked on DVD RECORDERS, only DVD players, so they didn't know what they could do for it, except that they'd have it about 6 weeks before they could get to it.

I've checked the internet and read reviews, and it seems that I have the same problems others have. If you record from TV and want to be sure that you actually will get to watch the show, I've learned to also program the VCR to record the same program just in case the RCA DVD freezes, or records a great picture without a sound.

IF the sound quits working, the only way to get it to work is reboot.....but after it initializes, you MUST go to a TV show and record at least 1 minute to make sure it's recording....sometimes after rebooting the thing, it still won't record sound!

I would love the unit if it would just be dependable!

Strengths: True Commercial Advance - no user action required! Nice user menus HDMI picture upconversion Camcorder to DVD recording Double Sided DVD recording support Tons of other features
Weaknesses: Timer Recording: No option to record 7 days a week. But you can work around this by setting up extra timers.
Summary: Wow, what a bargain (RCA DRC-8060N).

First off, if you research this product on the internet, you will find some very bad reviews and some good reviews. I can't explain why except that maybe some of the early releases of this model had bugs or the few bad reviews are people who got lemons or didn't read the user manual. I almost didn't buy this unit because of the bad reviews. But after trying one out, I just purchased a second unit today.

So far, my unit has been working great and I love the user interface menus. If something didn't work right, it was because I didn't follow the correct procedure. If that happens to you, try re-reading the manual.

For those of you who record a lot of TV shows and don't want to waste time watching commercials, this unit is it! Comercial Advance - I can't find any other manufacturer who has it. Most people don't know what it is. Most manufacturers don't put it in their products because it is privately patented and because there is pressure for you to watch commercials. However, this feature does a great job at preventing you from having to watch almost all commercials (note it won't autoskip a commercial rarely due to a unorthodox broadcast). Once you start using it, you'll be hooked and you'll always want commercial advance. You can usually watch an hour long program in 40-45 minutes - because you don't see any commercials.

I bought this unit because my RCA/PROSCAN VCR's with commercial advance are getting outdated. Their remotes have died before the VCR and I figured why invest money in replacment remotes when there are DVD recorders with lots of new features and enhanced picture quality.

The DVD version of Commercial Advance works even better than the VCR version - because there is no fast forwarding through commercials. It's just instantaneous.

Also, you can take the DVD out of the 8060N unit and play it in a regular DVD player that supports DVD+RW - and still get the benefits of Commercial Advance (just make sure to use the feature titiled Make Chapter Marks Compatible with other DVD Players - takes 5 minutes to run before ejecting your DVD).

This unit does have an HDMI output (although it is not highlighted on the TigerDirect pictures) as well as all other outputs. It also has HDMI picture upconversion.

The unit has a 1394 firewire or DV-in interface for downloading directly from a camcorder and burning it to a DVD.

I have not had a chance to use all the features yet (it does so much) - but so far so good. I'll try to add more reviews/updates in the future for anything good or bad.

The only flaw I have found so far is: recorder timers - you can record one time, M-F or same day each week, but there is no option for record program 7 days a week. RCA probably has a software fix for this (since you can reprogram the unit with software updates on DVD from their tech support).

Double-sided DVDs are supported. Although I have not had a chance to try one yet. It reportedly will double the amount of recording time allowed per DVD, which is 4hrs per side in normal recording mode.

Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the product and the price.

1 Star ReviewGood for the Price for about a week
Strengths: Easy set up. Upprocessing HDMI
Weaknesses: After about a week it locks up all the time. Won't finalize recordings.
Summary: I have had good luck with RCA in the past and was looking forward to my new DVD recorder. Set up was easy and straight forward. It will play both DVD-R-RW and DVD+R+RW as well and playing DL commercial disks. The picture is great the sound with the optical cable really is superb. But, it locks up when finalizing. Then the disk is ruined and can't be read by anything. This is a big problem. I have to unplug it in the back to get it to even respond to the remote. RCA customer service is not really there. I emailed them and have yet to hear back. I am returning it.

1 Star Reviewlots of good-sounding features, completely unreliable
Strengths: upconverts video
Weaknesses: locks up, won't record, won't finalize discs, overheats
Summary: I bought this DVD recorder based on price and feature-set figuring that RCA was a pretty good brand. Since then, I was able to record around 10 disks with no problem and none since then. I thought maybe it was a dirty lens at first, or possibly that the unit is overheating, but neither was the answer. After searching on the internet, I find that my symptoms are very common and that it's just a defect with the unit. I won't be buying RCA again.

Strengths: Number of features, such as upconversion, dual layer DVD, and DivX. And the price.
Weaknesses: Has "frozen" on me a couple times
Summary: I have had pretty good luck with RCA products in the past, and for the price ($170 with Rebate) and number of features I was looking for nothing really came close to the RCA 8060n.

The menu setup is pretty easy to grasp, everything is laid out so that it is easy to understand. When you select to record a program, you can set the time as well as the quality level. It also has a Smart Record feature which will calculate exactly how much space you have left on the disk and then maximize the quality. With the normal setting you can put about 4 hrs of recorded video on a single layered DVD disk, and the playback quality looked pretty good considering it was coming from an old VHS tape. I like the video inputs in the front for firewire, USB, S-video, and composite. Being able to upconvert DVD's to near HD quality through the DMI port is a good extra, as well as being able to play DivX encoded Avi's.

A few times it has frozen on me when I try to record. I am not sure why, but the remote did not respond and I had to pull the plug in the back and when I put it back in it was fine. The other problem I had was with the USB port, for some reason I could not get my jumpdrive to work, but that may be a compatibility issue. The button layout on the DVd itself is a little hard to read, the remote itself is pretty good except it took me a while to figure out that channel up/down button is how you move between chapters. The manual is pretty hepful in explaining most of the details if you take the time to read it.

Overall I would definitely recommend this recorder, you can't really find all these features for the price.

Strengths: Records TV well, excellent timer, fast disk read, fast disk write, commercial advance is nice, very solid recorder, not cheap Chinese junk.
Weaknesses: The option to make the chapter edits compatible with other DVD players on DVD+RW disks is very slow.
Summary: The option to make the chapter edits compatible with other DVD players on DVD+RW disks is very slow. This recorder has the optional capability of automatically putting in chapter marks where commercials can be skipped when played back in the 8060N. The 8060N logs these chapters as "hidden" so that when you watch the playback, it skips these chapters automatically. However, other DVD players don't know that those chapters are hidden, so they play the commercials. However, the 8060N has the capability of permanantly removing the commercials with a "make compatible with other players" option. This option takes about 20 minutes to perform, and is way too slow. That is the only major flaw.

I choose not to use this option, and set the auto commercial skip off and turn on auto chapter marks at 10 minute intervals. It works great.

Disk finalization is fast and simple.

Another great feature, is whenever you eject a DVD+RW, the player will create a main menu that is comaptible with other players automatically, and it does it quickly. This means that you really don't have to finalize DVD+RW's to play them in other DVD players (just make sure the other player can read DVD+RW disks).

The tuner is stereo, and pristine. It blows away the cheapie mono tuners in the ILO/Cyberhome/Samsung recorders. It also sounds better than the latest $189 Panasonic recorder (ES-320?). It took back the Panasonic because of it's flaw: it won't record TV unless you remember to power the unit off. The RCA 8060N has no such flaw, but will warn you when a recording is about to happen, and give you the option to cancel or continue with the recording. This is the perfect recorder for those who like to record TV.

The eight and six hour modes are useable, but grainy. The XP, SP, and LP modes are great. The menu system is elegant, and very easy to use.

This recorder is a dream recorder for me, and I am very happy wih it.

Strengths: HD Upconversion Commercial skip HDMI, USB, Firewire
Weaknesses: Only DVD+R, DVD+RW
Summary: This DVD Recorder is great addition to a home theater. You can recorder from live tv or from a dvr like tivo. Has Firewire for recording from a digital camcorder and USB for viewing jpegs from a memory stick. Using the HDMI with my 37" Westinghouse LCD, DVD's look incredible, like HDTV. Using the component output the picture looks almost as good as some other players using HDMI. I highly recommend this unit especially if you have an HDTV.

1 Star ReviewNot as represented
Strengths: none
Weaknesses: unreliable recording; commercial advance doesn't work; seizes up; ruins discs
Summary: What a rip off. Unreliable:schedule a program to be recorded and don't count on it (yes with the proper disc); moreover, when that happens the recording disc becomes unusable for future recording. The so-called commercial advance NEVER worked on any of the recordings that I was able to make; and, yes, it was properly set up to do that. Consequently, I have a machine that effectively functions only as a DVD player.

Strengths: easy to set up and use able to record 8 hrs on a 4.7GB disc easy to use menus
Weaknesses: does not record to DVD-R or DVD-RW discs
Summary: I have been using this recorder for a bit over a month now and has preformed very well, the commercial skip works great don't really notice when it skips the commercials. one thing I don't really care for is when you turn it on it takes about 30 sec or more to bring up the menu or are able to eject a disc or put one in. overall the qualaity of the recording of TV programs is just like watch the TV over your cable it is like your not watching a recorded program. Overall I am satisfied with this machine. and would recommend this to anyone wanting a DVD Recorder.
