Strengths: Sound, battery life (16 hrs on full charge), great intuitive design, small & light size, fabulous wired remote, nice case. Built in mic (nice), recs to MP3 or WAV, line in, analogue & dig I/O. Tuner.
Weaknesses: Software not clearly explained for Win98SE folks, utility of Manager software not clear. 10 Gig great for WMA (as they're smaller than MP3), but some would say too small capacity (all I need).
Summary: I purchased an iHP-100 a week before traveling overseas. I'm a full time musician, and this little guy kicks butt! 10 Gigs of space for WMA or MP3s (I prefer the size and quality of WMAs personally). And it records as well, built-in mic or line in (A&D I/O). For this functionality, the cost seems pretty reasonable ($350US).
I'm used to using portable DAT for recording, and this light little guy works great with the included mic or an attached through the line in (I use an AT 822). The included mic isn't too bad, really, especially considering you're recording to MP3 (up to 320 rate).
Usually I used the internal mic, as the AT 822 was in use with the DAT--just wanted to compare. The ease of use factor was tremendous.
Dig and Analogue I/O is terrific. The 10 gig is plenty for me. Windows reads it as another drive, so moving files back and forth wth the USB2.0 is very, very slick. Backlight is terrific.
IRiver has some of the best design on the market for personal audio. At least in this users opinion. I have one of their flash units as well (128M), and their sound and understanding of ease of use and sonically getting the biggest bang for your buck is what brought me back. This may be one of the last companies that isn't so large that it has lost perspective of making the consumer happy, happy, happy with a great product that delivers over and over again.
The unit is software upgradable, so a few days after I received I was able to
