Performance of Sharp 37" LC-37D6U LCD TV
Strengths: A name brand 37" LCD TV for below $1700.00.
Weaknesses: Disappointed with sharpness while viewing HD program
Summary: For a given size of the LCD TV, Sharp is one of the manufacturers that has many models of different hardware configurations. The Aquos LC-37D6U has speakers mounted under the LCD, rather than on both sides (it makes the TV too wide and needs more space to fit). Though the LC-37D6U has plastic frame in a Titanium-look color, it appears better than the Hitachi LCD TV that is in simple black and makes one think of cheap plastic. After several months of use, followings are the summary of the performance:
1)Installation: There two built-in tuners: regular TV and HD TV. If you want to receive free in air programs, you need two sets of antenna: One for HD signal and the other for regular TV. All channels need to be scanned first, and then memorized in the system. You cannot watch the TV without scanning and memorizing. If the memory is corrupted you have to do it over again. You will go through on screen menu to select either HD or regular programs. There is no simple button on the remote control to switch between. The user manual is not well written for people who only want plug-and-play.
2)Color: it is acceptable but not vivid. Vivid, I mean saturated colors: purity of the color and black is true black and white is true white. It looks better than Sony top of line LCD TV, XBR series that have a skin tone in exaggerated red and orange.
3)Sharpness: somewhat disappointed, particularly when viewing the HD channels. If display side by side with a Sony XBR, there is noticeable blurring on edge and contour and lack of contrast. The best one ever made is the Mitsubishi LT-3050. Unfortunately, it is discontinued and Mitsubishi’s newer models seem disappointing. Most LCD TVs offer some kinds of on-screen adjustment for enhancing contrast or sharpness. It often does not work well and produces little effect.
4)DVD playback: average performance. Sometime the picture was too dark and dim. It may be the problem of DVD manufacturer. However, like all other LCD TVs, there is no simple function to correct it.
I paid over $2100.00 in Jan. 2006. Now the price has dropped below $1700.00. For an average performance 37” LCD TV, the price may be right now.
