Strengths: Lightscribe is great Drive records DVDs fast
Weaknesses: Lightscribe takes awhile
Summary: 2005-12-29 13:09:44 Drive has a nice metal case. Even though the lightscribe takes awhile (about 20 minutes) it produces a completely professional looking result. Includes a very complete grouping of software for both Mac and PC.

Strengths: Fast drive, LightScribe works great, easy firewire connect.
Weaknesses: More detailed installation instructions.
Summary: Great drive, fast, good software, looks good. The Light Scan feature produces profecional looking disks. The doublelayer drive gives max storage caoacity. Would recommend this product to others looking for an external DVD?CD drive..

3 Star ReviewThe LaCie d2 External Dual Layer DVD writer with lighscribe.
Strengths: Very easy to set up. Pop in the disc plug in the burner and it works well.
Weaknesses: The light scribe was a let down. Have not been able to get it to work.
Summary: The burner came on the exact date that the seller stated. Very easy set up two plugs one into the CPU the other into the wall. Installed the software, not as straight forward as to which ones need to be installled. Could easily burn the movies, including an 8.5 GB. Please note, if your going to burn 8.5 Gb discs, your going to have to play it in a special DVD player that reads that format or use your burner as a player. The light scribe did not work nor could I get it to work, very frustrating. This was a major reason for buying it. Overall, as a standard DVD dual layer burner it is easy to use. Toast lite that comes with the unit is adequate for burning

2 Star ReviewGood until .....
Strengths: Easy to use and setup
Weaknesses: On/Off button hard to use. Unit failed after 10 months.
Summary: burned about 25 CDs and 12 DVDs over 8-10 months. Then drawer started popping open when unattended. Now it won't eject and I can't detect any spinning. Bought it at CompUSA, and of course they won't even try to service it ... I'll be opening the case soon.

Strengths: Software is easy to load on IMac. Works well with IMac burner.
Weaknesses: Problems with reading some discs. And LightScribe feature with certain maker's disc didn't work.
Summary: This is one of the few (only one I could find) external DVD burners with LightScribe that were suitable for Imacs. The burner does a very good job burning most discs. I have had several occasions where the LACIE did not want to read some second generation DVDs. These disc were open domain, with no anti-pirating encryption, yet the LACIE had difficulty reading them. Also, had difficulty with LightScribing Memorex discs. Interestingly enough, my HP burner with lightScribe did as well. The Toast 7 Platinum software does a good job in supporting the burner. It was easy to load onto the Imac, but registering it was not as simple. Plus, there were software updates right from the beginning. If you are looking for an external machine to use in tandem with the one in the IMac, this is a very good choice. They work well together and it fits nicely under my 20 inch screen.
