The other major innovation is a "dynamic iris," for dramatically improved black level, shadow detail, and overall contrast. The motorized lens iris is controlled by a circuit that continuously samples the brightness level of the video signal. The iris opens and closes instantly in response to picture brightness, precisely controlling the light output to maintain optimum contrast.This "Digital Cable Ready" HDTV can receive over-the-air and cable HDTV programming without a separate tuner box. The built-in TV Guide On Screen program guide provides listings for over-the-air and cable TV signals in your area. It lets you find your favorite shows and see which ones are in HD. Weaknesses: Extremely large screen! Summary: So far this TV has surpassed anything I expected. I was expecting really bad standard definition picture quality....it's good with both digital and analog (if the signal is good) channels. I saw a smaller model of this series in a store and was unimpressed with the SD picture. Who knows what quality signal they had feeding a zillion TVs? HD is incredible with stunning sharpness, vibrant colors and clarity. There has been mention of a "rainbow effect" and try as hard as I can, I can not see any evidence of this on either HD or SD channels. PC hookup via VGA cable is surprising too. It's like having a very good monitor that happens to be 71". Easy to read e-mails, compose documents, edit photos, etc. Before buying I would definitely measure EVERYTHING including the distance you will be sitting from the TV.
