3 Star ReviewBUFFALO WHR-G54S 802.11b/g 125M Wireless Cable/DSL Smart Router
Strengths: Support 125M Turbo mode when used with supported adapter.
Weaknesses: Only one antenna.
Summary: The design is very slick and this is the router whose firmware is hackable like some linksys router. You can google and find the wiki site easily.

This router also support 125M Turbo mode when used with supported buffalo adapters. But not all adapters support turbo mode.

Strengths: Use, versatility, range, security.
Weaknesses: None so far. Even firmware updates are current. Seems Buffalo tech support is all over this unit but havent even had to call. That account for ease of setup.
Summary: VERY easy to set up. The router has a proprietary AOSS which allows for secure wireless setup with the 'push of a button' . Many users don't go far enough into setup for that secure feature. This makes it a snap. I was impressed with the router strenghts in user friendliness and WIFI range.

I went ahead an opted for an aftermarket firmware that allows MUCH more capabilities. This is not for the faint of heart or beginning computer users. Even at factory usage, this router was solid.

I replaced my older D-Link with this due to reboots during long downloads and multiple reboots overnight. This router hangs on, is solid performance and has a nice clean look. Can't go wrong for the money and versatility.

Strengths: Decent signal, uses DD-WRT
Weaknesses: none
Summary: This is a nice, inexpensive router. It has a decent wireless signal and is easy to configure. One of the greatest advantages that this particular router has, is that it is the most inexpensive router that can run DD-WRT. DD-WRT is a free firmware upgrade that can give this router features of routers costing hundreds of dollars such as Quality of Service. Definitely look into DD-WRT if you purchase this router.

Strengths: High-performance, quick and easy setup, reliable, less expensive than LINKSYS, best in class.
Weaknesses: None aside from the color, but that's personal taste.
Summary: When I was shopping around for a wireless router, I looked at the LINKSYS first. I had my eye on their Linux-based wireless router because I read their other version was stripped down and wasn't as capable. I also heard newer versions were a little flakey. During my research, I found out about the Buffalo routers. The more I read about them, the more I realized they were just as good if not better than the LINKSYS, and on top of that they sell for less.

This wireless router indeed matches the LINKSYS competitor in features and performance, perhaps even exceeding the LINKSYS.

I thought there would be some more involved setup process, but I simply unpacked, connected the cables, powered it up, loaded the web-based setup program, and was up and running with reliable high-speed, high-performance wireless internet within minutes. What's more, the signal strength range of this router is excellent.

I highly recommend this router to anyone. You can get it for under $40 online if you look around.

Strengths: Highly configurable using 3rd-party firmware (DD-WRT), 100-240V adapter, small footprint
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I used a 3rd party firmware (dd-wrt v23sp2-vpn), to configure a standalone OpenVPN server on this router. While setting it up that way took a bit of time, it's definitely worth it as it gives me peace of mind whenever I tunnel my connections through it when using public access WiFi connections. This is in addition to the other features of dd-wrt (e.g. traffic shaping and variable transmission power).

This router has an external power adapter (power brick, not a wall wart) that has an input voltage of 100-240V, which is very useful for international use. It's also small and neater-looking than my previous Belkin router.

Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this router. It's the best

Strengths: Coverage, Bandwidth, Stability, Price, Ease of setup, compactness, runs cool
Weaknesses: None
Summary: After going thru D-link, Linksys, Netgear, Belkin and even Fry's Airlink 101, I finally found everything I need in WLAN router with a 4-port switch: IT WORKS WELL, ALWAYS and it does not get hot!

The best $40 I spent in IT equipment in the last 5 years.

Oh, and I did not check the DD-WRT yet...

Strengths: Inexpensive. Easy to set up.
Weaknesses: None so far.
Summary: My D-Link 802.11g routers I have purchased would not work on my internet provider's system. This works perfectly, allowing me have an internet connection in the detached garage/office facility and wireless internet throughout the house. I now have an encrypted system that works well.

1 Star ReviewBuffalo Router
Strengths: None
Weaknesses: Could not get to connect to internet. No interface setup would work.
Summary: No tech support on phone, waited in excess of 30 minutes with elevator music in my ear. Email gets you a response "Within 48 hours". Oh boy. Getting a refund for this hunk of technology junk.

Strengths: Easy setup, security options, good signal strength and range, compact size
Weaknesses: Doesn't seem to take long admin passwords
Summary: Decent firmware and configuration out of the box. Easy to set up and good default settings. Supports WPA, which is an order of magnitude better then old and busted WEP. This is the cheapest 54G router that supports the DD-WRT firmware (just Google it...). Haven't pulled the trigger and installed it yet, since the current firmware seems quite stable and reliable. Definitely a good router, with great possibilities and a great price.

Strengths: Great performance, DD-WRT flashable
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: My trusty old D-Link 802.11B crapped out after sitting in storage during my move. Got a Netgear 614, but it lacked some features that I was looking for. Then decided to go with Linksys WRT54G with the sole purpose of flashing the ROM. Got it home and found out that DD-WRT is currently not supported on v.8 of the Linksys which is what I got. Apparently Linksys made some modification to the chipset/ROM size. So back it went and I did a little more research and found this one. It was cheaper than the Linksys and works great!

Strengths: Great coverage, slim design and ease of use.
Weaknesses: nothing major, only that the status lights are located at the back
Summary: I've used Linksys as my dependable wireless-b router for my home network for longest time and I needed an upgrade, and Buffalo is a winner! Slim design, easy to use especially with a router-bridge mode switch, and a great price. Good job Buffalo!

Strengths: Easy to use.
Weaknesses: Only 8 characters maximum for the admin password. What's up with that?
Summary: Just got it today and so far, I'm very pleased. I don't get some of the other comments about the configuration interface being awkward. I configured it completely manually and it didn't take any longer to set up or seem that much different than the other brands of wireless router I've used before. This was one of the cheapest ones I could find that supported WPA. Came out of the box with the latest firmware already in it (impressive!). I haven't tried the DD-WRT route at all. Don't think I'll bother, as I'm quite pleased with the way it's working as it is. Although it's nice to know the option's there for the future.

Strengths: DD-WRT firmware can be flashed to this router, vertical design, improved range, WPA security, 4dbi antenna
Weaknesses: status lights on back
Summary: This is the best value router that can be flashed to DD-WRT. It works as good as the Linksys routers at about half the cost. I was glad that Buffalo came up with this router after Linksys downgraded the WRT54G. The increased range and firmware upgrade is essential to get reliable wireless where I live. Because of this routers performance I have recently purchased another and will recommend to others in my area.

Strengths: Small, compact, compatible with DD-WRT firmware Good range
Weaknesses: Shipped software not as good as DD-WRT
Summary: I purchased this router to replace a Belkin router, which was not working well (Kept dropping my connection). The buffalo was better, however it would also drop the connection. The router was using the built in software, so I changed to the open source DD-WRT firmware, which is WAY better. I never dropped my connection, and can change the router to be an access point to find other networks in my area, to find a quiet channel. Its really the best router for the price with DD-WRT.
