Strengths: Video quality, still photos quality, size, weight, hav ing a flash light
Weaknesses: Ridiculous SD-Card size, Standard battery life, who the hell defined the button usage (it looks like the definition was random!)
Summary: Hi,
I have had a share of digital cameras (Finepix 6800, Finepix M603, Canon Ixus v3, Canon Ixus II) and a sony cam corder. I have always been looking for a one device for all.
The status quo is, from my point of view i have the dilema to find the perfect digital gatdget:
- Photo cams trying to have it all:
Stengths: Size, weight, still photos quality
Weaknesses: Not enough zoom; Not enough storage; No image stabilization; Bad low-light performance in video. (The best is the M603 that records 640x480 at 30fps)
- Video cams trying to have it all:
Stengths: Video storage size, image stabilizer, zoom.
Weaknesses: Size, weight, battery life, still photo quality
I think that we (non video perfectioninsts) all have the idea that the video quality of current digital cams is very good. The only doubts are:
- Are still photos quality good enough?
- Is low-light performance good?
These where my doubts and regarding the first one, i made direct comparision between the Ixus II (1600x1200 resolution at best quality) and the MVX10i (1636x1284 at best quality) and although the Ixus II images have a better quality (it has a 3.2 MegaPixel ccd and is tunned for stills so this would be expected) i am very impressed with the quality of the MXV10i ones and if you print them on paper you really almost can't tell the difference!
About the low-light performance, the super-night shot works very well as longs as you don't move (!). But i prefer this one to the sony green solution.
All the rest is pretty good but i think that canon (and the others too, i might add) should pay attention to the ergonomy of the control distribution because each button makes a different thing and there is no consistency (or at least there doesn't seem to be).
With my Canon MVX10i (Optura 300) + Ixus II i have found the perfect ballance because finally i can have the best of both worlds: great video and very good pictures with the MVX10i if my focus is on video; great stills and good video (640x480 at 15fps) if my focus is on stills with the Ixus II.
I hope this helps!
