I bought this product a couple months ago. Within ...
Strengths: It works -- for the most part.
Weaknesses: BigBee isn't joking. Sharp does not stand behind their products. Their limited warranty is indeed very limited.
Summary: 2004-03-22 03:41:45 I bought this product a couple months ago. Within 5 days, I noticed a dead pixel on the screen. A small defect, but a defect nevertheless, and it's quite noticeable when the screen is bright. Furthermore, as a consumer, when I pay almost a $1000 for something (which is rare), I expect it to be defect-free -- at least at the time of purchase.
I contacted Sharp's customer service number (the same place in Illinois), stated the problem, and requested a repair or replacement. I was later contacted by one of Sharp's reps, who said a 1-pixel defect wasn't covered. I reminded them that their limited warranty did not make such distinctions -- a defect is a defect, and an expensive one at that.
They said the defect was "within guidelines" as dictated by "industry standards." By now, I was on the line with a supervisor. I asked the supervisor the source of these alleged "industry standards," and he could not cite it.
I asked the Sharp supervisor about MY guidelines and standards as a consumer after paying so much money for a product with a defect, and was basically told, "Sorry, that's the policy."
The two-star rating is very appropriate, the TV works, but I wouldn't purchase anything from Sharp again.
I realize I'm probably just unlucky to have purchased one Sharp product out of a hundred that happened to have a defect, and admittedly a small one at that.
My warning for you, Mr. and Mrs. Consumer, is to think twice before dealing with Sharp or buying their products -- at least on the Web. If you buy from Sharp, you may well get a perfectly fine product. However, considering that I'm not complaining alone on this website, Sharp obviously has a track record of not standing by their products.
For what it's worth, I'm in the process of contacting the FTC regarding this matter. Granted, my gripe is small, but a warranty is still supposed to be a guarantee. I wonder, with how many other consumers Sharp has pulled this nonsense?
Beware buyer. Beware.
