1 Star ReviewPhilips poor Service
Strengths: Average Picture, Average Sound, Good Price
Weaknesses: Poor Service, 800 help people not knowledgeable
Summary: After 7 weeks of trying to get service for my brand new 42" plasma, I get no where. I am constanstle told that there are no authorized service centers in my area and they are trying to find someone to do the work. Four Return calls to the Help desk gets me nowhere. According to the help desk I need the Video inputs replaced. Brand new set. Stay away from Philips .

1 Star ReviewA Very Expensive Piece of SH**!!!!!!
Strengths: It looks nicer when its shut off.
Weaknesses: Remote has horrible range, no screen saver, no OSD for volume, Instruction are lacking in material.
Summary: 6 weeks out of the box and I've had 2 different problems.

The sound drops out on occasion & now I have a black stripe about 12" long and 1" wide of no image! Philips refuses to replace my TV!

Strengths: Clarity is key here. Also make sure you install (mount or use stand) the TV on wall that is painted white, or close to enjo the full benefits of the Ambilight.
Weaknesses: Philips, one of my pixels is completely out. It is a small tiny dot on the bottom left of the screen however Philips has offered no resolution
Summary: Overall a great TV. Picture is great the TV is easy to set up and use, it is a great value for the $$$. The Sound quality is very good, the side panel makes the tv quite functional.

Strengths: Very good image quality, input-ouput connections, media connectivity, easy to upgrade firmware.
Weaknesses: Blacks are not as good as expected, remote range is very bad, menus are a little convoluted, stand is cheap.
Summary: I'm quite satisfied about this product, It really improved

my home teather experience, and the ambilight feature makes

the home tv look like a need device.

The downside is that every time I have to operate the tv

with the remote I find very annonying that many times it

would get my input until the third time I change the angle

when pushing the buttons.

For what I paid, I think I got a really good product, and

except for the remote I thins is a great plasma.

Strengths: Ambilight, flat panel, HD clarity, size
Weaknesses: Non-HD television stations are not as sharp or as vivid as a CRT, sound quality
Summary: This TV does a great job bring a theatrical experience into your living room. The ambilight adds another dimension to the television-viewing experience. It wall mounts nicely (but you will need to purchase your own wall mount separately).

It does come with a small stand as pictured, but you cannot set the television stand directly onto carpet. I would hesitate putting this TV with stand on top of furniture due to the weight of the television - particularly if you have pets or small children. Be sure to have at least two people to even pull the television out of the box (if you have it shipped) and/or to wall mount it.

The sound quality is okay, but I would also recommend a nice surround sound system to complete that theatrical television experience.

Also, the television is large, so be sure to allot a whole wall to it to alleviate a crowded look. Also, I would only purchase this size television if your seating arrangements allow you to sit at least 8-10 feet away from the screen.

My family and I are thoroughly enjoying our new television and if I had it to do over, I would still purchase this Philips TV.

Strengths: Perhaps the best feature of this television is the Ambilight. This feature creates a dynamic environment for which the tv picture seems to extend beyond the screen creating a unique viewing experience
Weaknesses: This tv has three weaknesses; the manual lacks an understandable description of the product's features, the tv picture lags when initially turned on, and the limited range on remote control
Summary: Overall this television provides an enjoyable experience in which to view digital television or other forms of media. Despite a few small frustrations, this television is a pioneer in the field of digital entertainment with the use of the ambilight technology.

We would recommend this television to others.

Strengths: Great picture, easy setup, simple to switch from one AV input to another.
Weaknesses: The automatic screen format settings causes some viewing material to switch screen formats back and forth on some material until you select a viewing format other than automatic.
Summary: The television looks great mounted on our bedroom wall. The Ambilight feature seems like just a gimmick in the store, but it really seems to make viewing easier on the eyes. I had a questions about the setup and customer service at Phillips provide a prompt, correct answer. I would recommend this set to anyone interested in a large plasma screen that is ready to operate HDTV out of the box.

Strengths: Ambilight is a very cool feature and truly does enhance viewing experience. Easy to setup right out of the box. 2 HDMI connections is nice. Outputs on side of tv is functional.
Weaknesses: Not compatible with Sony digital camera when using USB connection. No screen saver available. Tabletop stand that comes with it is very cheap looking and flimsy plastic.
Summary: Overall this tv is very nice to look at. We haven't used the higher quality cable setup for the HDMI inputs, only using component and S-video for now - quality is not that great. Also the auto correction on the tv is a bit annoying. TV still too new to check out the burn-in factor. Hopefully it's better than the Sony 42" plasma which has burn in's all over the place and is only 1.5 years old. The price of this unit is comparable to other 50" plasma's on the market. I would wait another 6 months for the price to get under $3k before purchasing.

2 Star ReviewDarn Good TV for the Price, Except for One Thing...
Strengths: Price (compared to other higher-end TVs with similar size and specs)
Weaknesses: Intermittent black screens when connected through receiver
Summary: I've had this television for a few months now. I did quite a bit of research on it before purchasing the unit, so I was well aware of its slightly lower quality on non-HD signals (actually, its not too bad from a distance... and I have a large family room, so it worked out well mounted on the wall).

The problems happened shortly after I hooked it up to my new high-end Yamaha receiver (using HDMI). At random times to screen goes black as if its not receiving a signal. If you go to the support page for this product, it is a known problem and they have released a firmware update. However, my receiver still has the problem. So I upgraded to a slightly better Yamaha receiver and still receive the same problem.

I've talked with Philips tech support a few times. They want to have it serviced. I've spoken with several service repair places who've said the same thing, "The problem lies with the signal coming from the receiver, and until Philips decided to address the problem, I'm out of luck."

I've called tech support again and again. All they can promise me is that a service technician can take my unit back to their shop for several weeks (no TV for me) and that the result will likely still be the same.

My advice... If you're planning to view your TV through a receiver, keep looking.

Strengths: Clarity, size, weight. remote control has nice options
Weaknesses: remote control range is low, or angle is low.
Summary: Great TV, as advertised. Easy to operate and install. Takes up less room than others, wall mountable. Manufacturer stays in touch with recall and warranty. would suggest for anyone who likes HDTV.

3 Star Review50PF9630A/37 50
Strengths: GREAT CONNECTIVITY
Weaknesses: AMBI LIGHT IS NOISY, PICTURE HAS TOO MUCH PIXELATION, BLACKS ARE NOT BLACK ENOUGH, SOUND IS LACKING
Summary: This is the second 50" Plasma I have bought over the last 2 months. Over all this is a good HDTV but there are others on the market that seem to give you better sound and picture. The Ambi light is a nice feature if you wall mount the unit otherwise is is useless. It does make a lot of HUM (Noise) as any fluorescent bulbs do. This greatly detracts to the unit when watching a low volume movie. I've noticed some pixelation on this TV while I have noticed none on the other I bought. This TV has all the connections in the world. This is a major plus for this unit. The other does not have near the input capabilities as this one does. This TV cost around $1,000 less than the other. If you have the extra money I would spend it on the other unit. It has better quality. BTW the other unit I bought was the Panasonic TH-50PX500U. I'm still happy with this unit, if you have a good sound system I highly reccomend using it for all sound output. This TV also lacks a display for volume level. There is no excuse for this. Overall I would highly reccomend that you spend the extra $.

1 Star ReviewPhilips 50PF9630A/37 50" Plasma TV
Strengths: Has clear crisp picture with good color.
Weaknesses: Instructions are weak. TV menu is cumbersum.
Summary: "Factory authorized technition" picked up 12 days ago.

Says the part is one of 450 on back order. Factory help center says 63 parts on order and that I should talk to thier technition and let him know. Is this tech. on my payroll?

2 Star ReviewNoisy ambilight
Strengths: Hd picture is great.
Weaknesses: Ambilight vibrates when the sound is on. on screen displays are lacking no screen saver for burn in
Summary: I have had a problem with the ambi lights vibrating when the internal speakers are on. Customer suport has told me they can have the tv picked up to be fixed but will not have a new tv for weeks. This is an ongoing problem and customer service is the pits. If you are not going to use the tvs speakers then get the tv but if you are please look somewhere else. Has been a hastle and doesn't seem to be getting fixed anytime soon.

Strengths: Great picture on HDTV source. Digital sources are very good and most analog sources are very good. I really like the Ambilights when used properly.
Weaknesses: Small 5 second blackouts 2 or 3 times a day. After reading other reviews I see that I am not the only one to have the problem. Remote control needs better sensitivity.
Summary: I bought this set from BestBuy in Canada for $3500.00 and it shipped with the wrong remote. It took nearly 3 weeks to resolve the issue. The TV is a great looking set and has a well designed table stand. If you plan to wall mount this TV you will not be able to use a standard mount because the mounting holes are too far apart. Picture quality is as good as it gets in this price range and I am very pleased with the set overall.

The SD card slot will not activate the browser and the USB port is not compatible with my Kodak camera.

The menu system is easy to follow and the set is very easy to setup unless you are a complete idiot. I recommend this unit and would do it again.
