3 Star ReviewMixed Review for RDR-VX515
Strengths: VCR works well. DVD recorder compatible with many media types and offers many recording formats.
Weaknesses: Disappointing DVD record quality in DVD Video mode - but may be the fault of media used instead of recorder.
Summary: I recorded 4 DVDs onto DVD-RW media from video taped home movies, 2 in the default DVD VR mode and 2 in DVD Video mode. The DVD VR recordings seemed okay, but can only be played back on the same recorder/player. I had to erase the first DVD Video mode disk because of what appeared to be poor automatic tracking of the video tape being copied. My second attempt at DVD Video mode recording resulted in a disk which was playable on other DVD players, but of poor quality (lots of colored squares appearing at random throughout playback.) I don't know if the problem is with the recorder or the DVD-RW media that I used.

Strengths: Easy to Setup, Convient, Great Quality, Easy to Use.
Weaknesses: None Yet
Summary: I seached for several day trying to figure out wich DVD burner I would get, because it was getting to be to time consuming using the computer so I wanted to be able with the push of a button transfer my old home videos. This i figured to be the best choice after reading user opinions, and asking sales associates at both circuit city and best buy. I have enjoyed the ease of use from this product. I just push the button and let it do all the work. Come back about 2 hours later (since thats about how much time i have recorded on all of my VHS tapes), and presto... all done.

Strengths: EXCELLENT QUALITY, EASE OF USE, CLEAR & CONCISE INSTRUCTIONS
Weaknesses: PRICE
Summary: We waited to purchase a DVD that could play and record. Now, we even have an added bonus that we can dub/copy VCR tapes to DVD with this model. Sony definitely hit one out of the park with this.

Strengths: Easy set-up, great multi-purpose unit
Weaknesses: Inability to output analog or S-Video while outputting Progressive Composite video
Summary: This is a great combination unit that provide full VCR capability with a DVD player/burner that supportys multiple formats. I would recommend this as opposed to having both a VCR AND DVD burner.

Strengths: easy to use for recording VHS tapes to dvd, easy to program for timed recordings
Weaknesses: some areas of the user manual are a little hard to understand, only records one hour on HQ setting
Summary: I was looking for a combo DVD/VCR that was easy to use and didn't cost a fortune. This model fits that bill. It is very easy to copy personal VHS tapes to DVD with this machine. The remote is pretty user friendly too. The manual leaves a little to be desired though. There are not as many editing features as I would have liked, but better than many of the lower end combo units out there. It does what I bought it to do very nicely.

Strengths: Recording and editing capability is beyond an end user's expectation!
Weaknesses: Auto Ddubbing feature has to be worked out. Pause between the start and end point did not really match my expectation when I tried on the first 3 dubbing.
Summary: SONY, is the name of price but the quality what I count on. I have been a buyer of quality at a good price. I was scared of having a compatibility issue with blank media and other VHS media imported. It serveed a greater compatibility satisfaction. I would suggest people who use this unit for the first time to read the manual completely and start the job. There are some on-screen great features which really provides user friendly options to manage your whole recording process. Manual editing is superb. I love it!

1 Star ReviewRDR VX 515
Strengths: Recording in many formats
Weaknesses: Longevity.
Summary: I bought my Rdr VX 515 about 16 months ago and have used it often to record from tv, tivo and comcast dvr hard drives. The manual is a little cumbersome and hard to understand at first. But then.

After only a short while my dvr would not accept the first blank dvd I loaded, it always refused it showing "error" in the screen. I would have better luck at dvd #2. This situation has deteriorated to the point where the dvr will no longer accept blank dvd's of any type or brand. For playback of pre-recorded dvd's the machine will now no longer accept the cheap discs from Netflix and also refuses to play many other pre-recorded discs. I have checked the lens and no easy solution.

I cannot recommend the Sony RDR VX 515 and am looking for a replacement for it right now.

Strengths: Ease of use; quality of recordings; interface with Sony DVD handcam
Weaknesses: None
Summary: Sony does it again. They are the best in the market and they demonstrate it again. This DVD recorder/VHS unit is the best for the money. The quality of the recording is excellent and this product is easy to use. I especially like the easy links to the Sony handycam. You can do so much with this unit. I have recorded my entire VHS library on DVD. You cannot go wrong with this product.

Strengths: records on all most dvd format, personally I have been using dvd+rw works great.
Weaknesses: for the price the remote could have been back lit, for use in the dark. Back pannel could have used an S-video input
Summary: It works just like recording on a vhs video tape when you use a RW disc. Converting old vhs to dvd is a breeze. The optical output is a nice feature to hook up to amplifier with an digital optical input for all those great surround sound

Strengths: Looks sharp! Easy to use! Easy set-up!
Weaknesses: None
Summary: Searched all over for a good DVD/VCR combo. When I saw that this was also a DVD Recorder, I knew I wanted it right away. Quick and easy set-up! Can't wait to start transfering my VHS tapes to DVD!

Strengths: Quality seems to be the best strength. Many features and compatabiliy points.
Weaknesses: Operating manual difficute to understand, especially the setup portions.
Summary: I have been using this recorder for a few days now. I had a problem connecting to an older TV. My TV has only a RF antenna connection. While this DVD recorder has an RF output, I could not get it to work. Called customer service and they could not figure it out either. Was also told that I could not watch DVDs using the RF output anyway. So I got a video to RF converter to connect between the Sony unit and TV. Works great this way.

The operating manual seems to be hard to follow. Could be that this unit has so many features it is hard to explain them all with clarity.

Strengths: Great quality, sleek design, ease of use
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: I absolutely love this product. I have shopped around for a quality machine at a good price, and certainly have found that with this item. It's a VCR/DVD player, and recorder all in one. It also offers +R/-R formats. A great combination, especially if you want a multifunctional unit that is nicely designed and space saving too. What's even better is that it is easy to use, even for those of us who aren't tech savvy.
