Grabbed By The Ghoulies
Strengths: Interesting and goofy enemies, easy controls
Weaknesses: Very repetitive
Summary: Grabbed By The Ghoulies puts you in the role of Cooper, a teenage boy that has to save his girlfriend from a haunted mansion. The game has an interesting setup where each room that you go in has a specific goal that must be met in order to move on to the next room. These goals start off rather simple with you just beating up all the enemies in the room. The rest of the game is really just a variation on this one simple goal. There are just more restrictions on how you must beat the enemies as you progress. For instance, you come across levels where you can only use weapons to defeat enemies or levels where you must only defeat enemies of a certain type.
There are plenty of wacky weapons to use in this game (hamburgers, soda pop guns, etc) and a lot of objects to either pick up or break. The levels offer quite a bit of interaction and this allows for a surprising amount of exploration for small rooms. There is only one hidden item per room, a book that unlocks mini-games, but there are a lot of power-ups to find as well.
These power-ups range from invisibility to having little mini-Coopers (the character, not the cars) that help you in battle. Like a lot of the levels in the game, the power-ups are all time based and do not carry over into the next rooms.
The controls are mainly regulated to the two analog sticks with the left stick used for movement and the right stick used for attacks. It's a simple control scheme that works pretty well for the most part. It can get pretty repetitive after a while though.
The graphics are decent and offer the perfect cartoon atmosphere that the game is shooting for. The soundtrack also is perfectly acceptable for a game like this.
Overall, Grabbed By The Ghoulies is a good game, but it is rather short and can get surprisingly difficult in some places. I think this game is worth playing through once, but there's not much replay value.
