Strengths: Unbeatable in their price range, great range and high-class look. Quality, quality, quality.
Weaknesses: Bass could be a little better. Piano finish is very susceptible to small childrens fingerprints - and even the kids can't leave 'em alone.
Summary: I was able to put together an entire Yamaha Home Theater system working with on-line vendors. Sounds cheap right......wrong!
I purchased Yamaha's HTR-5660 receiver, which puts out a modest 85 watts RMS across 6 channels. Yamaha has always had a reputation for top quality electronics, at all price points. However, speakers were never their forte. Then came the new NS and HX series speakers in 2003.
The center piece of my system is two NS-777's mated with a Yamaha SW315 subwoofer. I also have a Yamaha NS-C444 front center channel speaker and two NS-333's in the rear. I have not yet purchased a rear center channel.
This system is awesome. All the speakers are tone/voice matched and transition is flawless. Any shortcomings on the 777's low end are quickly erased by the clean rich bass of the SW315. The 777's have clear, brilliant highs and an unparalleled seperation. Close your eyes and your there, imaging is unbelievable at this price.
And the look......these things look like you spent a grand a piece on them. The case is elliptical with a black piano finish. They speak quality all around. I have had more than one friend say, "You bought Yamaha speakers, what were you thinking?" That is until they heard them.
I test drove a number of other speakers before settling on these. Most noteable were Bose, Paradigm and Polk. The local Paradigm dealer also deals in Yamaha. I initially stopped by to see the 777's and they did not have any and claimed that the Paradigm's, at any price point, could crush the equivalent Yamaha speaker. He stated that they only sell Yamaha for its unbeatable electronics. To make a long story short, I convinced them to order a set of 777's and they were amazed. Priced well below entry level Paradigms, the 777's simply look and sound better, period. The salesman was speechless. Needless to say, you will now find 777's and 555's in their sound lab.
If Yamaha continues to deliver sound and quality like this, they will quickly establish themselves beyond their electronics.
You owe it to yourself to listen to these. It is worth the effort to find a pair, you will not be disappointed.
