Strengths: Light-weight; uses Mini DVD-R and DVD-RW media; "Night-Shot"
Weaknesses: Short battery life; comes without flash or video light
Summary: I am very pleased with the performance of the Sony Handycam DCR-DVD200. I previously owned a Sony Mavica FD-75 digital camera which I absolutely loved, that's pretty much the only reason why I bought this Sony product now, not even considering other brands. It has more than enough features for the "home video enthusiast". The footage shot is crisp, the sound is satisfactory, and it comes bundled with Image Mixer which is great for a little "post-production editing", although for more complex applications and for the more serious user, I would recommend buying a professional video editing package, Adobe offers a good one. The only drawback I find with this product would be that the accessories are going to be costly. The stock battery is, in my opinion, too small. It doesn't come with an external charger (you have to charge the battery in the camera), so if you went out and plopped down another $60 for a spare, you'll also have to invest $60 in the independent charger. It also doesn't come with neither a flash nor a video light, which is a serious con for the serious digital videographer. Both of these accessories are in the $99 to $149 price range. I gave this product 4 stars for price/performance ratio and out of the box it is more than sufficient for most home movie applications. If you could only buy ONE accessory for this product, buy a flash, indoor pictures come out a bit too grainy for my taste without one.
