Strengths: Drive fit securely into enclosure tray without screws or cheap plastic adaptors. You only need to remove 2 small Philips screws to swap drives. Setup was quick and easy. Truly plug and play!
Weaknesses: Thumb screws over Philips would have been a nice touch, making it tool-less to swap drives.
Summary: Most consistent performance of any enclosure I have used. On par with the expensive Maxtor or Western Digital External drives at a fraction of the price when you buy your HDD's on sale. Maxtor 300GB/16MB worked in this enclosure without any issues. Box says 'supports up to 1000GB drives.' Aluminum dissipates heat well, no noisy fans needed.

Strengths: No noise from fan. Small size. Support up to 1000GB. USB/Firewire Combo.
Weaknesses: Enclosure gets hot. Power brick could be smaller.
Summary: In performance side, this is a really good enclosure. Very stable. What I'm worrying about is that the case gets hot after several hours of usage. It can be a good sign because the case dissipates heat well. But the inside part holding the hard drive is plastic (not good in conducting heat) and it contacts with the aluminum case. In other words, the heat from the hard drive is conducted via plastic (or air) to the aluminum. It would be better if adpatec made the inside part from some kind of metal.

Strengths: USB 2.0 and FireWire, and the design is solid.
Weaknesses: None that I can find.
Summary: Adaptec has always had a good product line; I've purchased USB Hubs from them and now this hard drive enclosure. I've never had a problem. The FireWire is your best bet for transfer speeds, and the design is clean and solid.

Firewire Enabled External Hard Drive Enclosure!
Strengths: Design. Materials. Price. USB & Firewire.
Weaknesses: No Fan to Cool Unit.
Summary: The newer version of the Adaptec external hard drive enclosure is Firewire enabled. The unit comes with everything you need minus a 3.5" hard drive to get started. The item doesn't have a cooling fan so I don't leave the unit on at all times. I power down once in a while. Most external hard drives are the same these days but just in case I would pick up a model with a fan since this one does tend to heat up.

Adaptec Hard driver enclosure USB/FIREWIRE model ACS-200
Strengths: great performance, work perfect with windows XP- Firewire not as fast as USB 2.0 (480mbps)
Weaknesses: Driver motor seems not stop or idle while connected,I have 160GB drive get hot quick,no cooling fan :(
Summary: Everthing is great, sad no having cooling fan built in, the driver gets hot quick.
Works perfect in windows XP, for other windows versions there is a driver software CD to be installed.
Price is very good for what you get.
Reliable if used as backup unit, turning on when need and keep it off when not in use,to avoid the heat issues that can damage the driver.

Strengths: Sturdy case, cool, Dual USB/Fire option
Weaknesses: Minor issue with power plug
Summary: I have make myself an external hard drive with this Adapter ACS-200 dual usb 2.0 and firewire option hard drive enclosure. Being using it for at least 6 months now and am very satisfied with it. I have tried both the USB2.0 and Firewire connection and both work well. Easy to open the enclosure by unscrewing 2 screws. The only (minor) gripe I have is with the power connector. Its looks like a PS2 connector and my power connection does not seem to be tight - the connector can easily come off. This is a minor issue since I hardly have to move the enclosure around while it is still powered up.

Strengths: Silent, cool operation, fast transfers, straightforward installation.
Weaknesses: No tech support, time consuming to switch drives with lots of screws, short usb and firewire cables, firewire cable didn't match my laptop connector.
Summary: Overall I'm very happy with the Adaptec ACS200 enclosure. Sleek looking, silent, fast. I only gave it 4 stars because of the runaround I got when contacting Adaptec, and the disappointing firewire transfer speed. I got the firewire model because I'd read that 1394 firewire was significantly faster for large transfers. I'm getting about 1.15 gb per minute reads either USB or firewire. But writes are 1.05 gb USB, but only 0.70 gb firewire. Since I mostly write, the extra $ for firewire was a waste. Get the ACS-100 unless you NEED firewire. To be fair, I don't know if the slower firewire has anything to do with the ACS-200 in particular, my Dell laptop implementation of 1394, or firewire in general.
Installation was easy, but I wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis. If you remove both ends it's considerably easier to get the drive in and out. But that's 4 more screws to deal with, which makes 10 including the 4 that screw into the drive.
If you want to get some input from Adaptec on the technical aspects of this product, forget it. They will send you a new one if it doesn't work, but they won't talk to you. Don't waste your time trying to register the product at their website so that you can send them an email or talk to a tech support person. It took me an hour of fooling around before I got someone on the phone to tell me they consider the product a cable. It works or it doesn't. End of discussion.

Strengths: easy installation, small size, excellent Firewire implementation
Weaknesses: not stackable, more expensive than comparable products, no manual
Summary: If you've ever installed a hard drive before, you'll be able to set this puppy up in a few minutes with no problems.
On the other hand, if you've never installed a hard drive before, be prepared for some of the scantiest documentation ever seen from a manufacturer of this caliber. Follow the instructions on the back panel of the box - because that's all you get.
Also, this product requires a small Philips head screwdriver for installation, the type found in PC repair kits (several of my smaller Lowe's/Home Depot-type screwdrivers didn't fit), so do have one of those on hand.
Still, Windows recognizes the drive immediately, and from there you format and use the device as you please. If you're an experienced user, this is a great product. Less experienced users may be intimidated, but even then installation shouldn't take you longer than 15 minutes.

Strengths: Supports upto 1TB HD; pretty reliable; Good shape
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: This enclosure is sleek and very compact. Recognized by both my laptop and desktop. I have no problems using it so far. I'm using a 160 GB seagate HD, and don't try other HDs, although it claims that can support HD upto 1 TB.
