Strengths: High-Definition support for DVDs, Space-saving slim profile, includes free HDMI cable, many features, supports several media formats and WMA, MP3, Picture CD and JPG.
Weaknesses: Must switch video source on remote control when moving from Analog Cable TV/VHS to HDMI DVD, since the former cannot be viewed in Hi-Def. Lack of DivX support.
Summary: I would definitely recommend this product if you need to watch DVD and VHS tapes and want to save space. This little High-Definition Conversion DVD Player & Hi-Fi Stereo VCR looks great. Watching DVDs on HDMI Up-Conversion at 720p or 1080i on a Hi-Def LCD TV makes you never want to watch them on an old progressive scan DVD player again. Some older DVDs only showed a slight improvement but DVDs mastered in hi-def looks fantastic. It took a little while setting it up and learning to use it with the TV since it has quite a few features. You cannot view any analog or VCR stuff using the HDMI cable and have to use a separate component Video/Audio Cable and switch the video source between the two. The DVD tray opens and closes quickly compared to my old DVD Combo.

Strengths: I purchased this machine for it's upconversion DVD feature and to save space in both a DVD and VCR combined unit.
Weaknesses: After a month, I have yet to find any fault with this machine which has delivered exactly what has been promiced.
Summary: I had purchased a Toshiba upconversion DVD/VCR unit prior to this unit and it did not work with my Sony HD TV. The Samsung worked great from the get-go. The VCR unit is fine but it is the DVD upconversion feature that makes this unit special. I noticed a marked improvement in color saturation and grain detail over my previous Sony progressive scan DVD player. The 1080I setting provided the best definition for both color and B/W films.

I purchased the unit at Fry's for $99.00, a bargain for such a feature filled unit. One warning, if you have an older HD TV with a DVI connection, the Samsung is set up for HDMI, cord included. A DVI/HDMI adapter will facilitate the connection.

3 Star ReviewSamsung DVD V9500 recorder
Strengths: Easy to use, similiar to programming a VCR
Weaknesses: While playing prerorded movies, it doesn't indicate how much time is remaining. Also hard to navigate the audio choices while playing a movie. My older Sony DVD player could indicate time elapsed, etc
Summary: This DVD recorder replaced a VCR. It does the job nicely and the DVD's take up a lot less space than the VHS tapes. However, My first DVD-RW only lasted 3 weeks and I could not use it anymore (got error messages). I recorded 2-3 hrs per day. Overall a good recorder but not enough features while playing prerecorded movies.
