 Our company, Saint Mary's Hospital in Saginaw, MI ... Strengths: NONE
Weaknesses: 2 broken right out of box and HP will not exchange.
Summary: 2003-11-20 05:53:05 Our company, Saint Mary's Hospital in Saginaw, MI purchased two HP Inkjet 1100's a few weeks back. Both had problems right out of the box. In one a manufacturing defect for the slot for the yellow cartridge causes it not to stay in place. The other smears the ink.
The nightly cleaning crew took the boxes away after the printers were installed. A call to HP got forwarded to India where the service tech was barely understandable and then after much repeating.
HP refused to do swap for other new printers. Said they would swap for a refurbished (imagine..a brand new printer that is defective for a used refurished).
They said that had we immediately boxed them back up they would have swapped.
The company we purchased the printers through is taking the hit on this themselves when it should be HP making it right. Their tech called and spoke to an HP supervisor trying to see if he could fix on site and after 2 hours on the phone got really angry with the HP supervisor. The supervisor said this is HP's new policy on ink jet printers and unless they are immediately put back in a box they will not deal (printer even supposedly has a warranty...what kind of warranty is this one must ask?)
Bottom line...HP service is not what it used to be. If you want to be ripped off buy HP. Otherwise, it is now time to steer clear of HP products. Maybe if enough people stop purchasing HP will rethink a policy of not supporting their brand new equipment.

Strengths: Fast, efficient, duplex printing.
Weaknesses: Not totally inexpensive, Networking module makes it even more pricey.
Summary: 2004-02-16 09:43:06 Duplex printing is a big plus, and it is a very economical printer. Unfortunately, HP ships them out with half size cartridges so expect to buy new ones sooner that you might have thought.

Strengths: great print quality, fast, reliable, no ink clogging, relatively economical ink costs
Weaknesses: large size, flimsy-feeling construction
Summary: 2005-08-09 18:53:05 I posted the first part of this review after owning the HP for 9 months. I've just added more information at the end now that I've owned it for 18 months. My opinion after printing 500 pages per month for 18 months: This is a ***GREAT*** printer!
This is my third HP inkjet. All have been excellent, and this is by far the best. I've had it nine months and have done a lot of printing. I have every reason to believe that like my old HP 500 and HP 540, the 1100 will give me years of workhorse service ... unlike the Epson I made the mistake of buying to replace the 540.
The print quality is exceptional, approaching laser printers in quality. Its large black ink cartridge lasts far longer than any other printer I've owned. For a writer like me, this is crucial. The ink has never clogged.
My only complaint is, I suspect, a problem with all color inkjets. Even when set to print with the black cartridge only, it still uses color ink. I have just spent $100 to replace the three color cartridges, despite the fact that I have printed virtually no color. I estimate that the replacement color cartridges will last me nearly two years, so it's not a major expense. My Epson was far worse in this regard. In retrospect, because of the color ink usage, a black and white laser printer might have been a more economical choice in the long run.

I've now had this printer for over 1 1/2 years. I print an average of 500 pages per month, mostly B&W. I am amazed at how good it is. The printer has already paid for itself - continuing to use my old Epson would have cost me far more in ink expense than I paid for the HP and the ink it's used.
I mentioned in my earlier review that I had to spend $100 on replacement color cartrides, but amazingly, even though the color cartridges all show as empty and I do occasionally print color, I'm still using the original color cartrides.
I can't praise this printer highly enough, for its economy, it's outstanding laser-like print quality, and its reliability. I'd buy another without hesitation.

Strengths: We where able to continue using the stock of Ink Cartridges we had for the previous HP2000C printer. Installation and setup was easy.
Weaknesses: Would not work with Linksys Print Server. We have submitted a trouble ticket with HP and do not have a response.
Summary: We tried to use this printer in conjuntion with the Linksys Print Server and could not get the combination to work. Through troubleshooting with HP & Linksys it seems that the printer is the source of the problem. Switched the Linksys PrintServer with another and it works fine.

Strengths: Fast printing. Duplexes. Uses separate print cartridges.
Weaknesses: Little bit noisy when starting up. Cannot tell how much paper is in tray without lifting output tray.
Summary: Very fast - especially in draft mode. Easy to set up. Print quality is very good with laser-like appearance. Have had approximately 3 weeks with no problems whatsoever. Great printer.

 I like this printer, but will attempt to return it ... Strengths: Terrific speed and print quality, especially color
Weaknesses: Problems printing double sided legal. Very noisy. Consumables expended faster than advertised.
Summary: I like this printer, but will attempt to return it due to problems with double sided legal printing. Used printer for printing a church bulletin, 4 pages set on legal size, folded in the center, double sided. 1st side prints fine. Print 2nd side legal and it will pick up as many as 6 pages at a time, printing no more than 7 pages in a row before screwing up. Have tried several paper grades with same result. Automatic duplexing unit will not work with legal size. Print cartridge life is about 2/3 of published rating. Color and graphics are tremendous, and fast normal printing is very fast with high quality. Price was very reasonable if it had worked correctly.

Strengths: Great print quality--text looks sharp, no ripples or patterns in color, duplexer a very nice feature, price per page attractive.
Weaknesses: Bulky for an inkjet, and noisier than I expected.
Summary: I just bought it today after reading the PCWorld review. I love how sharp the text looks, and how smooth the colors are--some inkjet printers leave ripples or variations when printing big areas of a single color, but this machine distributes the ink very evenly. The duplexer is very handy--though I should add that 2-sided printed takes considerably longer per page; for some reason, each sheet sits there for several seconds after side one is done, before the machine sucks it back in and flips it over to print side two. Also, it's a big machine, especially on a desk in a home office, and it's pretty noisy. And one thing the PCWorld review might have mentioned is how much it vibrates when it prints; the motion of the print heads moving back and forth makes my desktop lamp and flat-panel monitor vibrate noticably. It's probably best to put this printer on a stand or table separate from one's working surface, otherwise it might make you a little seasick.
I've tried to elaborate on the concerns just for information's sake, but the print quality, speed, and per-page price far outweight this printer's, um, "conspicuous" presence.

Strengths: Low-cost of ownership, individual ink tanks, fast printing, high quality output, feels well-made, the selection of HP papers.
Weaknesses: Limited paper tray, duplexer creates some weird printing anomalies with high-end proof work. Also, it has the largest power block I've seen in a long time.
Summary: So far this printer has performed admirably. It compares very well to the other inkjets that I have come across (Epson, other HPs etc.). It stocks up well but is just shy of the printing quality of HP's Cp1700 printer- but that's a much more expensive printer.

Strengths: Excellent print quality! It can handle 16 - 145lb media and has automatic double-sided printing, so it is ideal for printing on cover stock, high quality business card stock, and heavy brochure paper.
Weaknesses: It's bulky, and it shakes a bit since the printhead moves so quickly
Summary: This is a great printer for the home office. It is big compared to most of the desktop models out now, but the size is necessary for the features. The HP1100 series is made to do a lot of good quality printing.
Unless you know you need to set it up on a network, don't get the network model (HP1100dtn). The upgrade is $100 more (list price); you can always buy an external print server for less than that if you eventually need one.

Strengths: easy to setup; great print quality, fast speed for an inkjet; good value for the money.
Weaknesses: switching to legal size paper a little cumbersome when using a single tray.
Summary: We are using this printer as one of our network printers and it works great for sharing because of its' speed and general ease of use. The color quality is excellent for presentation materials, even photos. Had our eye on this printer for awhile; wish we had purchased sooner.

Strengths: Fast good print quality when working
Weaknesses: Printer feed failure - unable to repair.
Summary: From the start the pinter would pick up multiple pages staggered so that part of page was printed on each sheet. This was occasional but one could not print 30 pages without it happening. Maddenig on a mail merge printout. Spent $28 shipping to Califorina for repair after HOURS on the phone with HP foreign voices that could not be understood. The problem was pretty much fixed but two new ones popped up. In a long print the paper feed would not eject the page on occasion ane we would come back to find it stalled instead of finished. Push the button and another 5 pages would print and stall again. Only on evelopes and photo paper, one blank sheet feeds, then it prints and does not eject, push button and two more blank sheets feed and hang, push button and next page would print with same sequence of blank pages. I cannot trust HP to repair this thing again as I would have $60 invested in repairs of a $200 printer with no guranantee it would work.
