Strengths: Small, Compact, Light
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I purchased the DGS-1005D on 1/22 and have been very happy with it. Install was easy, just plug in the power adapter and your Cat5 cables and your done. If you need a gigabit switch, for $40 (+$10 rebate) you can't do much better.

Strengths: Fast swtiching and transmission; plug and play; no configuration needed; non blocking; auto sensing; LED differentiation for 10/100/1000 connections
Weaknesses: throughput reduced when mixing 10 or 100 with 1000 Mbps connections in the same switch
Summary: As an entry level 5-port Gibabit switch, D-Link DGS-1005D performs quite well. If you frequently transfer large data files like video files between PCs, this switch is a must have since it cuts the file transfer time by around 90%. Files accessing and retrieving from the network is almost the same as from the local PC if the source and destination PCs support Gigabit ethernet. However, there is no difference in web browsing performance since broadband throughput is still less than 50Mbps nowadays even with cable modem internet service, needless to say DSL.

Strengths: Small footprint, just about idiot proof, shows speed of each port
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: This is an easy way to expand your network, and upgrade to gigabit speeds. Just plug it into your existing router, and presto, you've got 4 more ports you can use. It auto-senses the speed of each port and the LED will show you what the speed is, so you don't have to guess if you have a 1000/100/10 connection. The small footprint means it fits/hides just about anywhere.

Strengths: Fast, automatic switching; no noticable lag in the bandwith; no software required to run (just plug it in)
Weaknesses: Rubber feet are a wee bit weird and seem prone to falling out; light construction makes it hard to keep on the table when adjusting RJ-45 wires
Summary: I managed to overcome my fear of D-Link (which seems to have rather sub-standard wireless devices) and got this to hook my laptop, desktop, Xbox, and printer up for a small home network. As it turns out, this was a good move. This switch is seemless when it comes to managing connections and doesn't require any software management. Even better, I've noticed no extra lag in my connection while playing bandwith-intensive games, and this device gets along with my Linksys wireless bridge just fine. My only real complaint is that the rubber feet don't seem completely seated, and the device is so light it bounces around when the RJ-45 cords are jarred even slighty. The latter complaint, however, seems to be a problem with every ethernet switch I've seen, so don't let that be a deciding factor, just weight it down manually or mount it.

Strengths: fast. shows me speeds of computers connected. slip grip feet
Weaknesses: ratels when moved. doesnt show any thing for computer connected at 10mb
Summary: The d-link 5 port gig switch is a great product, made by a name brand company. It really speeded up my network from going to a 10mb hub to a gig switch. And the product also stacks nicely with other d-link products.

Strengths: 10/100/1000 autoselect speed without the need for uplink or cross-over cable for connecting to another switch or hub.
Weaknesses: None that I can see so far.
Summary: Connected it to the D-Link DI-604 I just got with a straight-through Cat 5 cable without any uplink port or cross-over cable. Now I have Gbps FDX network for the hosts on the LAN, which share the DSL connection to the internet.

Strengths: Easy set up, super fast speed. Keeping in line with D-Link products.
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: I purchased the 8-port version of this switch about 1 month ago. I connceted that switch to my router and had all my systems ready for gigabit ethernet. Then I realized I had a D-Link DSS 5+ switch that I wanted to replace to get gigabit capacity for my other devices/systems. So I decided to purchase the 5-port version and am happy I did. It installed flawlessly and now my systems downstairs are connected to my systems upstairs and they are ALL gigabit ready. Now if only I can get (at a reasonable cost) gigabit ethernet NAS.

Strengths: lightning fast transfers
Weaknesses: doesn't sound like it has much support on the interior of unit
Summary: I love this switch. Transfered just over 16 gigs in 15 mins, and that was from a 8mb buffer drive to an older 2mb buffer drive. I can't wait to get some faster hard drives and really see the transfer speed rachet up even more.

3 Star Reviewit works, but it's flimsy
Strengths: it has five gigabit ports and not too many lights
Weaknesses: a strong sneeze might blow it away no support for jumbo packets could use more memory
Summary: For a simple home network backbone, this will do. But I'll be shocked if there's any metal in the whole thing apart from the circuit board traces. It's really flimsy, but it works. If you want a more solid switch, try one from SMC or Dell.

Strengths: Very fast and quiet
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: I just replaced another gig switch that was the noisiest piece of equipment in my office. This D-Link switch is just as fast and runs silently. It seems to be a solid product and was definitely worth the money.

1 Star ReviewDoesn't work at 100T.
Strengths: Works with D-Link DFL-200 router to connect to the Internet.
Weaknesses: Very poor ethernet transfers at 100T. Runs hot.
Summary: 2007-01-20 01:50:49 This switch promises data transfers at "wire speed." Well, when I directly connect my two computers together with a crossover cable I can transfer data at 6 MBps with 100T ethernet cards and default Windows 2000 TCP/IP settings (7 MBps when I set RWIN to 5840 and activate timestamps). When I connect using this switch, the transfers refuse to budge past 100 KBps, which is obviously only a tiny fraction of wire speed.

.

When I opened the lid on this unit, I found the main chip is sizzling hot. D-Link pasted a cheap heatsink onto it, but it doesn't help much because there is no fan and the ventilation holes on the case are much too small. I used a fan to cool everything myself, but still slow transfers.

.

Buy the Cisco/Linksys 5 Port Switch 10/100 Desktop (model SD205) instead. It works at full transfer speed and runs cool.
