It used to be that if you wanted a big-screen TV, you had to give up the
benefits of LCD. No more. These days, LCD TVs come in 40-inch sizes and
more. How to choose the best at the best price? Here are my personal picks.
Big-screen LCD TVs offer crisp, LCD performance, but still give you the
benefits of big, big TVs. So what to buy? Start out with the Sharp Aquos
LC-45GX6U
for as low as . It offers a 45-inch screen, and is capable of full HDTV
resolution of 1920 x 1080. It has a 800:1 contrast ratio, a 16:9 aspect
ratio, and wide viewing angles of 170 by 170 degrees. It also has detachable
speakers, a PC Card slot which allows you to record and view still images
and video on a PC Card; and Sharp's proprietary Quick Shoot video circuit,
which enables a fast response time of less than 12 ms.
For another big-screen LCD wonder, try the Samsung LTP468W
for as low
as . It's a 46-incher, and like the Sharp, has 1920 x 1080 HDTV resolution,
and an 800:1 contrast ratio.
Those who want big-screen LCDs, but don't want to pay for 45- and
46-inchers, should try the 40-inch Samsung LTN406W
for as low
as . You get a 600:1 contrast ratio, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a resolution
of 1280 x 768. It's HDTV compatible, and uses the features an enhanced TFT
panel - PVA (plus viewing angle) for an improved viewing angle and contrast
ratio.
If you want to get big - real big - then you need the Toshiba 50HP81
for aw low as
. It features a whopping 50-inch screen and a spectacular 1366 x 768
resolution. It also includes Toshiba's IDSC Pro, TouchFocus and PowerFocus
Optic systems for producing sharp, bright, high contrast images.
Finally, if you want to get a great LCD TV that's not quite 40 inches, but
that'll save you a boatload of money, check out the Sharp LC-37G4U
for as low
as . It's a 37-incher that has an HDTV-compatible resolution of 1366 x 768,
and an 800:1 contrast ratio. It uses Sharp's proprietary Advanced Super
View/Black TFT Panel, which provides levels of high brightness, and has a
viewing angel of 170 by 170 degrees. Says one PriceGrabber customer, who
gives it a five-star rating: "Beautiful, extremely detailed menu, and unreal
picture and sound."
